Years and years and burning, furious years had faded into nothing. All the raging and grieving and suffering had gone dark and silent. There wasn't even despair now. He had gone too quiet, too still for even that.
Was he awake? Not really. Was he aware? Of course. The red eyes were closed, his power was leashed, he was too starved and weak to escape, but an ember still burned deep in the furnace. There was a scrap of strength still in him and he saved it. He might only get one chance to strike when his captors remembered him.
His senses slowly shut down as the years rolled on. He had no heartbeat to count out the minutes. He was too far removed from the world to feel the change of the moon and the seasons. His hunger was too utter to let him dwell on it. He shriveled there, like a snapping turtle wasting away inside his shell. In the beginning, he had raged at the indignity of it. Then, he had plotted his revenge. Eventually, he sank too deep for even that and there was only the hunger.
He was still hungry in this stillness, maybe always would be, but as his shell slowly collapsed in on itself, a certain peace came with it. It wouldn't last. Peace never did. It had taught him patience though, and when the blood finally came, he would be ready.
