Here are the adventures I had in California.
Monday(?) the seventh, I flew into SFO. Carmen! picked me up therefrom. We drove back to her house in MV, where I went to sleep on her Amazing Folding Couch Thing.
The next day, Carmen went to work, and I wondered around MV some and ate some Indian food. Then I worked on my FOOL presentation and played a bunch of Portal. That night, after some logistical nightmares, Carmen, Chris, William, dkb, dfontain, Purple, Brian, gwillen and I went to dinner in Palo Alto. Afterwards, we met Brewer at Google building 42 and played in their ballpit for a bit. Eventually, Carmen and went I went back to her apartment and slept.
The next day, Dave, Dan, Chris, William and I drove to San Francsico. After Chris, William and I checked in to the Hotel, we all went to get some food and then to the Exploratorium, including the Tactile Dome. Afterwards, we walked along the water a ways to Ghiradelli Square, where we got cupcakes at Kara's Cupcakes, failed to get chocolate, and had dinner in a diner. Afterwards, Dave and Dan went back to their car and away, and Chris, William and I went to the hotel. There, we hung around in the bar, and William had a flight of martinis, for which he was mocked by Harper.
The next day was the beginning of POPL. I saw a bunch of talks and talked to some people. Kate gave her talk. That evening, Chris, William and I went to Scoma's a delicious Italian Seafood restaurant. This was possibly the most money I have ever spent on a meal for just me.
The next day was more POPL. I skipped most of the talks, except Marius', and talked to a bunch of people. That evening, Psyfe came to see us from Berkely, so he, Chris, William, Kate and I went to the Stinking Rose, the garlic restaurant, which was damn delicious. Afterwards, I gave a completely wretched FOOL practice talk to Kate, Chris and William.
Saturday was the final day of POPL. I went to many talks, including an amazing one by Conor McBride, which had handmade overhead transparencies with moving parts. I missed a lot of talks to work on my FOOL talk. That evening, I skipped dinner with Benjamin Pierce in favor of hanging around the Haight with Carmen, which was lots of fun. We ate dinner at a crepe place, and generally rocked out.
The next days was FOOL. I gave my talk, and it went moderately well. Chris Stone asked a slightly awkward question, but I was complimented on it by one of the invited speakers. Later, Chris, William and I met dkb at the hotel, and then went to Japantown, where we met Nesky for sushi. There was also weird swettened, carbonated sake and disturbing marinated ginger that tasted like O_o. Yes,.really. Then we bussed, with some minor logistical failures, to the Golden Gate Bridge.
The Golden Gate Bridge is amazing. It is gigantic and gorgeous. As far as bridges go, it really is the apex of human endeavor. Or something like that.
At the Bridge, we met Carmen again. She then drove us to SoMa, whereat we feasted on tasty Mexican food. Way too much tasty Mexican food. Then she took Chris and William to the airport, returned me to the hotel, and left.
That evening, I took a nice, 6.2 mile walk through San Francisco, through Nob Hill, Chinatown, Downtown, and North beach. Then I slept a bunch.
The next morning, I walked another few miles. Then I had a delicious spinach-chicken-pesto crepe, and then took a taxi to the BART to the airport and flew back to Seattle.
