Summary: On a routine mission, things get off to a rough start as Kakashi realizes something incredibly dangerous for both him and his partner's health.
“So when we enter the perimeter our cover will be as the Morishita family scanning the town for-”
“No.”
Kakashi blinked slowly. Sakura had never argued about their cover before? Sure, they had argued over other various things many times on their paired missions, but not cover stories. Whatever he had come up with in his imaginative head was usually good enough for the girl.
“Sakura, the Morishita name will give us cover for-”
“I don’t care about the name. We can’t be family.”
She was being unusually… Well, typically stubborn about a subject she was never before stubborn about. The Jounin stopped walking when he realized his partner wasn’t even looking at him. She stopped as well… But still wasn’t looking at him. Kakashi realized this would one of Sakura’s ‘pull my teeth’ moments from her silence.
“And why can’t we be family?” They had been father and daughter on every mission where a cover was necessary.
“Because. You’re not even old enough to be my father.” There was a slight blush on her cheeks as she resolutely didn’t look him. Was she arguing for his own benefit and ego? Sure, playing the authoritative father-figure was easy, if a little degrading because it really made him feel old. After all this time his pride barely felt the blow anymore though. That and he was certainly closer to middle aged than all previous missions. How old was Sakura now? Seventeen? That made him…
“No, I’m not,” as he had informed her the first time she had teasingly called him an old man, “But it is only about appearances, Sakura.” Thirty-one. Sad that he only kept track of his own age by a calendar or his former students.
Her blush deepened, strangely enough, “Well, it’s not a very believable appearance anymore.” Kakashi seemed to be blinking a lot around her lately. Obviously they couldn’t finish the mission until this issue was dealt with, though they weren’t exactly on a strict time table, but the silver haired man was getting tired of Sakura’s ‘pulling teeth’ act. She was the talkative one wasn’t she? So she should talk.
“Sakura.” He crossed his arms and figured the warning tone in his voice should be enough to get her lips moving. The girl swallowed, trying to resist and have some of Kakashi’s legendary patience and silence, but it didn’t appear to be working.
Finally, she turned all the way towards him, green eyes resolutely looking at his arms. “I’m too old, yet too young to be traveling around on business with my father. Besides, anyone could tell you’re not old enough to have a nearly grown daughter.” Was it just him, or were her eyes going over his figure. And rather slowly too. As flattering as her last statement was, he couldn’t quite get over the incredulity of his discovery.
“We can’t play family because you’re attracted to me?” How the hell did he miss that? Somewhere between her birthday party and the last mission report? And as arrogant his question sounded, when he noticed Sakura’s irate expression he still couldn’t bring himself to fully register such information.
“It’s not like you couldn’t say the same about me!” Her hands clenched into fists and she met his exposed eye challengingly. Obligingly, Kakashi scanned her angry figure and promptly looked away. So he might have been avoiding such a possible conversation since she turned fifteen. He had only convinced himself of his own perversion when on the Team’s first mission he had taken his position at the back of the group only to be assaulted with the visage of Sakura’s incredible ass.
Since then he tended to walk in front of or beside the girl. Aloof as Kakashi was he had succeeded in deterring similar embarrassing or compromising situations despite their mission assignments over the years. He wasn’t about to end all his previous efforts, “Cousins then.”
When all else fails, ignore the last statement. Get back to the argument. Except this time, he was the one who couldn’t look her in the eye, “No.”
“Then what do you suggest, Sakura-chan?” Correction, when all else fails, make Sakura too embarrassed to keep her stubbornness.
Fuck. She was still looking him in the eye. She was still angry.
“Lovers.”
Fuck.
