This was inspired by a convo on tumblr; so here's my first piece of the New Year, meant to take place soon after Two and Jamie's 6B reunion--
One thing that Jamie had noticed since his reunion with the Doctor was that the Doctor tended to dote on him much more than before. A slight mention of wanting to see somewhere led to an extended holiday, a twinge of hunger led to a trip to the finest eateries in the galaxy, and random presents were not an uncommon thing, regardless of occasions or not.
And so, when the Doctor greeted Jamie one moment with a wrapped-up box, the piper was only mildly surprised and more curious than anything else as he opened it. But of all the things he had been expecting, however, a copy of the Doctor’s gigantic fur coat was not among them.
“I got it from Thraxis-where I got my own coat,” the Doctor said, happily. “I figured that you could use it when the agency sends us to anywhere cold, or if we end up somewhere cold on our own. We could match!”
“…Aye, we’d… certainly match…” Jamie said, not sure of what else to say as he held it up. “And it’d be… easy to find each other in a crowd, I suppose…”
The tone of Jamie’s voice didn’t escape the Doctor, however, and his face fell almost immediately.
“You don’t like it,” he realized, softly.
“No, no!” Jamie exclaimed, hastily, feeling bad to hear the Doctor disappointed. “It’s nae that I don’ like it; it’s just that I di’n expect something like this.”
“Because it’s just not the sort of thing you’d have chosen for yourself,” the Doctor sighed.
“Nae really,” Jamie admitted. “But-”
“Of course, I should have realized that it didn’t match your aesthetic,” the Doctor went on. “Oh, I’m sorry, Jamie.”
“Ye don’ have t’ feel sorry fer giving me a present,” Jamie insisted.
“It isn’t just that,” the Doctor said, bitterly. “I’m out of touch-that’s the real problem here.”
“What do ye mean?”
“I mean exactly that,” the Doctor said. “I was away from you for so long, I… It’s as though I have to get to know you all over again.” He glanced at Jamie. “I suppose you must feel the same way-that you’ve noticed the changes in me.”
“Aye, I’ve noticed a few…” Jamie admitted. “Ye worry a lot more now and ye’re nae as carefree as ye used t’ be. But the most important thing has remained the same. Ye still care aboot me.” He placed the coat down and walked over to the Doctor; he placed his hands on the Time Lord’s shoulders. “I’ve already told ye many times that’s all I e’er need.”
The Doctor managed a smile and placed his hands on Jamie’s shoulders, as well.
“Yes, of course I still do,” he said. “That is one thing that can never change. And you don’t have to wear that coat if you don’t want to, Jamie.”
“Well,” the piper mused. “It would be nice nae t’ have blue knees the next time we go somewhere verra cold….”
He picked the coat up and looked at it for a moment. Maybe it wasn’t much to look at, but it was practical and warm-much like the Doctor’s hearts, which were where Jamie knew the gift was from.
He looked back at the Doctor and smiled.
“Thank ye, Doctor.”
The Doctor drew Jamie into an embrace.
“Thank you, Jamie,” he said.
