Classic Film-Era Quiz

Classic Film Era Quiz

1. Favorite classic Disney?
Assuming that "classic" refers to when Walt Disney was alive, my favorite classic would be, as I mentioned in the old 30 Day Disney meme, Dumbo. It was my first classic (and one of my first Disney movies--shortly after Beauty and the Beast). Even when I was a kid, I always loved the "Pink Elephants on Parade" scene--I found it so amazingly surreal.

2. Favorite film from the year 1939?
I have to agree with Faye--Wizard of Oz, hands down. I've loved it since the first time I saw it. It's definitely a classic, timeless film.

3. Favorite Carole Lombard screwball role?
...I've never seen one of her movies...

4. Favorite off screen couple? (It’s OK if it ended in divorce.)
Simon & Lois Oakland (like Faye said) and Darren McGavin & Kathie Browne. I know much more about the latter than the former, but based on interviews from both Simon and Darren, it seems that their wives were very much health-conscious and wanted to make sure they were eating right (Darren, in particular, has a lovely story about how Kathie would try to trick him into thinking he'd eaten a whole lot more than he actually had).

And though it ended in divorce, Richard Dawson & Diana Dors was very cute while it lasted. Sad that it didn't work out, but I'm glad that Richard is still happily married to his second wife, Gretchen. Come to think of it, Kathie was Darren's second wife.

5. Favorite pair of best friends? (i.e: Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Crawford)
Well, I don't know if they were best friends, but Simon and Darren were definitely friends.

I also have to agree with Faye's mention of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. And I'd like to add Laurel and Hardy to that, too. If there's one thing I like more than a double act, it's a double act that makes buddy movies.

6. Favorite actor with a mustache?
Hmm. I normally prefer actors/men to be clean-shaven, but there is one exception: Vincent Price. I think he looks equally adorable with or without his mustache.

7. Favorite blonde actress?
...That awkward moment when I realize that I pay significantly much more attention to actors than actresses. Hmm... well, Kathie Browne was blonde, wasn't she? Her, then! I've only seen two of her TV appearances--she had a bit part as a KAOS agent in an ep of Get Smart and played the oneshot character Lt. Irene Lamont in an ep of Kolchak (which is why there's a part of my mind that cannot 100% turn away from a Carl/Irene pairing--it's very hard to ignore a pairing when the actor & actress were married in real life... ...And I'm supposed to be anti-romantic? *headdesk*). I also know that she appeared in a few eps of Bonanza, which I expect I'll be looking into sometime soon.

8. Favorite pre-code?
...I have no idea what this means...

9. Which studio would you have liked to join?
What Faye said--whichever one my favorite actors were in! Though if I had to pick only one, I would pick Disney.

10. Favorite common on screen pairing that SHOULD have gotten married?
...I don't do real-life shipping.

11. Favorite "I Love Lucy" episode?
LOL, definitely that early ep (I think it was episode 4?) where Lucy reads one murder mystery novel too many and becomes convinced that Ricky is trying to kill her. She's completely mistaken, of course, but the ensuing fiasco is just classic.

12. Out of these actresses which one do you like best: Lucille Ball, Ingrid Bergman, Natalie Wood, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Greer Garson, or Katharine Hepburn?
Out of these? Yeah, going with Faye and saying Audrey Hepburn, but for a different reason. I totally based my portrayal of Newkirk's sister Mavis from my Hogan's Heroes fics on Audrey's portrayal of Eliza Doolittle. In fact, whenever I was working out the scenes between Newkirk and Mavis in my "Follow Me to Heaven" fic I did some time ago, I really did picture the scenes playing out with Richard Dawson and Audrey Hepburn.

13. Shadowy film noir from the 1940s or splashy colorful musicals from the 1950s?
Oh, I couldn't decide. I love them both for different reasons, but I guess film noir might have a slight edge over musicals due to my knack for reading/writing mystery fics.

...We need a mystery musical. Yes.

14. Actor or actress with the best autograph (photo preferred).
...Well, of course I'm going to be completely subjective and say my favorites: Simon Oakland, Darren McGavin, Robert Clary, and Richard Dawson. Of these four, I actually have Robert's autograph--on a personalized note. ♥

15. A baby (or childhood, or teenage) photo of either your favorite actress or actor (or both, if you’d like.)
...I *thought* I saw a pic of teenage Darren floating around somewhere, but I can't find it now (maybe I was pipdreaming? I dunno...). Ah, well. Oh, and Robert Clary has a couple pictures of his younger years in his book--my favorite has to be the one of him and his friends with kazoos--and he has an amusing tale to go along with that, as well. LOL.
