Reading Challenge, December 2009 to December 2010.

Jan 07, 2011 20:56

Some of you may remember my challenge from last year.

This year's goal: To read 100 books within a year. Surpassed goal in August of 2010. As of today, January 1, 2011 I have read 128 books from December 2009 through December 2010. I'm proud :)

From last year: The last two weeks of my 2009 challenge were spent rereading a series I loved as a child. I won't list them all individually as they're short reads and I got pretty far in the series, but ratings and comments recorded are listed below.

The first two weeks of my 2010 challenge were spent finishing rereading that same series.

Animorphs 19-53 by KA Applegate
Stars ranging from 1-5
The Departure: Once again reaffirms that Cassie is an annoying PITA.
The Solution: The David storyline was pretty awesome. He was such a little psycho.
The Pretender: The first of this series to receive 5 stars from me. This one is pretty heavy for a kids book.
The Suspicion: Righteously disturbing. Kind of reminded me of an Outer Limits episode.
The Extreme: Polar bears. Reminded me of Ice.
The Attack: If I could do no stars, I would. This took FOREVER to get through it was so awful.
The Sickness: First Cassie story that didn't make me violent.
The Illusion: I really like Tobias' subplot. In this book the characters seem to have aged up a bit, I remember the series ran from their middle school years to very early 20s, and every book up until now has focused on them being very young. I wish they focused more on a time frame.
The Proposal: <3 Although Marco gets all the really gross morphing issues.
The Answer: You can't help but feel badly for Jake.
The Beginning: I can never decide if open endings frustrate or amuse me. That said, we're finished, finally. It took about a month, but I read all 54 books in this series, plus like 5 side stories that go with it. And it was quite a ride. One thing that irked me was that you could tell when the author stopped using her ghostwriter. The last story arc was infinitely better, and not just the story itself, but the writing as well.

Megamorphs 3 and 4 by KA Applegate
Elfangor's Secret: Stupid

Animorphs: Visser
2 stars

From last year: The last book added to my 2009 shelf is half read so it will be included here and in my 2010 list.

The Making of a Quarterback: The Incredible Rise of Eli Manning and the New York Giants
3 stars

*Unfortunately my GoodReads account messed up the order I read these in and I realized it after I was more than halfway done. Not going back to fix it :(

Stolen (Women of the Otherworld #2) by Kelley Armstrong
3 stars

Fallen by Lauren Kate
5 stars - I went into this not really knowing what to expect, and I'm so glad I didn't. The last half of it was so good.

Ruined: A Ghost Story by Paula Morris
3 stars - I don't really know what to make of this book. I really liked the New Orleans history aspect and the ghost story itself, but the end was poorly executed. Morris kept changing points of view near the end from Rebecca to a mystery person, and some parts of the last few chapters didn't make sense.

The Shining by Stephen King
5 stars - Quite possibly my favorite book ever.

xxx

Still good the ..5th? time rereading it. The Shining is so much more than a ghost story.

Willow by Julia Hoban
4 stars

Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson
3 stars - I hated everything from the characters to the formatting right up until the very end. And then every emotion Lia experienced hit me when I wasn't expecting it.

Rainbow Valley (Anne of Green Gables #7) by Lucy M. Montgomery
5 stars - I've already read this before, and after the emotional roller-coaster I've experienced with my book choices lately, I need something comforting. This is my favorite book in the series.

The Rose and the Beast: Fairy Tales Retold by Francesca Lia Block
1 star

Wake (Dream Catcher #1) by Lisa McMann
5 stars - I was worried about whether or not I'd like this. Last summer, all my friends were going crazy and I just didn't get it. I read the summary and brushed it off. This year I made a deal with a friend; she had to read The Shining and I'd read the Dream Catcher series, and I am soooo glad I did.

Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly by Anthony Bourdain
3 stars - Anthony Bourdain has scared me from eating out ever again.

Discovering Stephen King's The Shining by Tony Magistrale
3 stars

Lover Mine (Black Dagger Brotherhood #8) by JR Ward
2 stars - Not my favorite..

Spirit Bound (Vampire Academy #5) by Richelle Mead
5 stars - Ms. Mead outdid herself.

Dark Whispers (Unicorn Chronicles #3) by Bruce Coville
3 stars

Frostbite (Vampire Academy #2) by Richelle Mead
4 stars
reread

Shadow Kiss (Vampire Academy #3) by Richelle Mead
5 stars
reread
Good Omens by Terry Pratchett
3 stars

Ghostgirl (Ghostgirl #1) by Tonya Hurley
1 star - This is the dumbest fucking waste I've ever read.

Summer of Night by Dan Simmons
2 stars - I discovered the reason why I enjoy YA books more than adult books while reading Summer of Night. They don't tend to be so drawn out and boorish with unnecessary detailing. While I really liked the first-read sequel, this moved at such a snail's pace that I didn't think I would ever finish.

The Xander Years, Volume 1 by Keith RA DeCandido
1 star

A Little Bit Wicked: Life, Love, and Faith in Stages by Kristin Chenoweth
3 stars - KC is too cute.

Linger (Wolves of Mercy Falls #2) by Maggie Stiefvater
3 stars - I definitely liked the first book better, but Linger still kept Same and Grace's story moving beautifully. A modern day Romeo and Juliet story, with a twist. So beautifully tragic.

The Center of Winter: A Novel by Marya Hornbacher
2 stars

Clockwork Angel (Infernal Devices #1) by Cassandra Clare
5 stars - This reminded me a little bit of A Great and Terrible Beauty, and the main characters all have some semblance to the TMI characters, and Cassandra Clare is entirely too fond of cliffhangers, but this is otherwise one my favorite books read this year.

City of Bones (Mortal Instruments #1) by Cassandra Clare
5 stars
reread

Shit My Dad Says by Justin Halpern
3 stars - Sam Halpern is a funny dude.

City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments #2) by Cassandra Clare
5 stars
reread

The Enchanted Places by Christopher Milne
2 stars - Christopher Robin's adult perception of his childhood toys is heartbreaking to a Pooh fan.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner
4 stars - Better than expected.

The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey
1 star - I wanted to like this so badly.

Torment (Fallen #2) by Lauren Kate
3 stars - Sweet baby Jesus, this book. Lauren Kate has created the epic romance to end all epics, but she can't get a story moving to save her life. Too wordy, not enough to keep the reader going, and yet the final chapters make you forget that and want the next book. The first 300 pages make you want to scream, but the end draws you back in.

Crescendo (Hush, Hush #2) by Becca Fitzpatrick
5 stars - Most anticipated book of the year.

Firespell (Dark Elite #1) by Chole Neill
3 stars

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future: Twists, Turns, and Lessons Learned by Michael J. Fox
3 stars

The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum
5 stars - Terrifyingly sad that a woman could encourage such things to happen to a young girl.

The Last Hunt (Unicorn Chronicles #4) by Bruce Coville
3 stars - And finally, 12 years after I started the series, the epic unicorn saga comes to an end. Coville did not disappoint.

Rock My World: A Novel of Thongs, Spandex, and Love in G Minor by Liza Conrad
1 star - A short and easy read, super cheesy.

Last Sacrifice (Vampire Academy #6) by Richelle Mead
5 stars - A series ending epic adventure that never once lets you down. Richelle Mead did it right.

Bailey's Journal by Catherin Clark
1 star

Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn
3 stars - Fast paced, short little read with fun characters. I'm especially partial to the fact that Lily calls her aunt Mrs. Basil E. after Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

School's Out - Forever (Maximum Ride #2) by James Patterson
5 stars

Broken (Women of the Otherworld #6) by Kelley Armstrong
3 stars - Skipping right to Elena's next book, idgaf about the witches.

Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports (Maximum Ride #3) by James Patterson
5 stars - Soooo good, but what a mind fuck.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman
4 stars - Finished it on the plane.. so sweet. Thank you Vally.

The Final Warning (Maximum Ride #4) by James Patterson
5 stars - I'm being entertained and learning about global warming, all at the same time. But I'd still like to know who The Voice is. And more about Jeb. Lots of unanswered questions still.

Max (Maximum Ride #5) by James Patterson
5 stars - Crazy at first, still unanswered questions, Brigid's a whore. Possibly a diabolical whore.

Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception by Maggie Stiefvater
3 stars - Little confusing at times, some things not fully explained, but a good book non-the-less.

The Awakening and The Struggle by LJ Smith
1 star - I should have listened when people told me I wouldn't like it. I have the whole series in .pdf but I don't think I'll continue.

Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles #1) by Kami Garcia
4 stars - Interesting, well thought out, wholly developed characters, and there's enough that's gone unanswered to have makings for a sequel. 4 stars instead of 5 for the borrowed Stephen King concepts.

Perchance to Dream (Theatre Illuminata #2) by Lisa Mantchev
3 stars - It took awhile to get into, and the first book was definitely better, but Perchance to Dream still carried with it the beauty that made me fall in love with the series.

Anne of Ingleside by LM Montgomery
5 stars

Rilla of Ingleside by LM Montgomery
4 stars

The Crack Cocaine Diet by Laura Lippman
2 stars - So not what I was expecting.

One Foot in the Grave (Night Huntress #2) by Jeanine Frost
5 stars - Ridiculously, ridiculously amazing.

By the Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead by Julie Anne Peters
2 stars - First book off Vally's Rosie Read These shelf!!

At Grave's End (Night Huntress #3) by Jeanine Frost
5 stars - Edge of your seat reading.

With and Wizard by James Patterson
2 stars - Super easy read, kind of stupid story. It amuses me that this was marketed as "Harry Potter who?" cause really. James Patterson, JK Rowling you are not.

The Reckoning (Darkest Powers #3) by Kelley Armstrong
4 stars - Armstrong has a habit of rushing her endings, but still a nice end to Chole's story. I hope she revists her and her friends in a future book.

Destined for an Early Grave (Night Huntress #4) by Jeanine Frost
5 stars - I've come to realize that I might be too attached to these characters.

Song of the Wanderer (Unicorn Chronicles #2) by Bruce Coville
4 stars - I'm not gonna lie, idgaf that it's book for kids, this continuing story is just as beautiful as I remember the first one being all those years ago.

Fade (Dream Catcher #2) by Lisa McMann
4 stars - Pretty good. Curious to see what happens next.

Gone (Dream Catcher #3) by Lisa McMann
2 stars - Not as good as the other ones in the series.

Intertwined by Gena Showalter
3 stars

Grave's End by Elaine Mercado
1 star - This woman is in serious need of a CAT scan.

Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy #1) be Richelle Mead
4 stars
reread

Vampire Kisses (Vampire Kisses #1) by Ellen Schreiber
2 stars - I hadn't realized my copy of this book was actually three bound as one, so even though this story is pretty two dimensional and Raven is a bit annoying, I'll continue through the second and third books. Easy reading.

Fang (Maximum Ride #6) by James Patterson
3 stars - Angel has a really, really frustrating storyline.

Kissing Coffins (Vampire Kisses #2) by Ellen Schreiber
1 star - I really, really want to gauge my eyes out reading this. But the next book is just over 100 pages long, and it will not beat me!

A Winter Haunting by Dan Simmons
4 stars - Stephen King praises the author with good reason.

Vampireville (Vampire Kisses #3) by Ellen Schreiber
1 sta - I'm offended that Ellen Schreiber has a publisher.

Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman
2 stars - I just couldn't get into it. Which sucks, because I love Gaiman.

The Godfather by Mario Puzo
5 stars - Such a powerful story.

Moon Called (Mercedes Thompson #1) by Patricia Briggs
3 stars - Solid story, will read the next book. I especially enjoyed Adam's line "the next time I see your cat on my property, I will eat it." I've used it twice already

Blood Bound (Mercedes Thompson #2) by Patricia Briggs
5 stars - Absolutely excellent.

Kisses from Hell by Kristin Cast
2 stars - This was alright; I really liked the Alyson Noel story and Richelle Mead's, but I probably won't read the others in the series.

City of Glass (Mortal Instruments #3) by Cassandra Clare
5 stars
reread

I Am Ozzy by Ozzy Osbourne
2 stars

Philadelphia Haunts: At Eastern State Penitentiary, Fort Mifflin, and Other Ghostly Sites by Katharine Sarro
3 stars - I can't wait to hit up Eastern State Pen next month!

The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff
3 stars - My first Changeling story, and it was pretty interesting

Beautiful Darkness (Caster Chronicles #2) by Kami Garcia
3 stars - This series is incredibly annoying in that the author wastes a couple hundred pages on useless drivel and then packs everything worth reading into the last half of the book. Garcia has done this for both books and it's incredibly frustrating to get into. It's hard to want to continue but at the same time what she's set up for the next book is intriguing. Grr.

Haunted by Your Touch by Jeanine Frost
2 stars - I was really only interested in the first story, the other two were pretty whatever.

I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore
3 stars - Interesting story, good characters. Bernie Kosar <3

The Scorch Trials (Maze Runner #2) by James Dashner
5 stars - Yeah, this series is pretty much way better than I ever expected. The Scorch Trials did not disappoint. I can't wait for the third installment.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter (Dexter #1) by Jeff Lindsay
3 stars - An interesting book. It's been almost three years since I've read a crime novel, and I'm glad I dived in with Dexter.

Dearly Devoted Dexter (Dexter #2) by Jeff Lindsay
3 stars

Grave Witch by Kalanya Price
3 stars - This had some pretty great twists.

Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris
2 stars - Not Sedaris' best work.

Pleasure Unbound (Demonica #1) by Larissa Ione
5 stars - My name twin insists I read this.

It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini
2 stars
