Also, recent reads....
Mr. Midshipman Hornblower and Lieutenant Hornblower by C.S. Forester - These books are the first two, chronologically, in the Horatio Hornblower series that takes place during the Napoleonic Wars in the 18th-19th century. Don't let the goofy name fool you; these are great books, full of adventure, mystery, and a hero you'll love to cheer on as he grows from gawky adolescent to competent commander of his own vessel.
Grade: A
Readability: Very re-readable and not hard to understand since the naval terms are either explained by the action or don't matter.
Trickster's Choice by Tamora Pierce - I've heard Tamora Pierce mentioned quite frequently in reading circles so I grabbed this one off the young adult reading shelf at the library. Aly, a precocious teenager, finds herself up to her stubby hair in trouble when she runs away from home and gets sold into slavery. Lucky for her a local god is looking out for her. Or is she lucky at all? The god's wager might just put her and those she cares about at risk...
Grade: B-
Readability: Not sure if this one is worth a reread; I'll decide after the sequel, though it's a good sign that I will be seeking out the second book. There was a lot of info dumping at the beginning; probably the author wanted to avoid a 500 page book (it's already bulky for a YA book at 403 pages, and no, I'm not including the Harry Potter books, they are anamolies in YA book lengths), so there was a lot of names, places, and history that didn't really fall into place until the middle of the book. I think she probably could have inserted it more gracefully into characters' conversations, but whatever. I got through it and liked it well enough. Aly came across as Mary Sueish as well, though, again, I can forgive that since it was a fairly well-written book.
