fanfic favorites (that I wrote)

sabaceanbabe recently made this post with a list of what she viewed as her best works in fic-writing. It was interesting, the trends I spotted in her favorite stories that match trends in mine as well, such as lots of minor characters getting major roles in fic. That and not usually writing fandom's preferred pairing, whatever pair that may be. I was already inclined in that direction, but S'babe's stories were an influence in those earliest months.

So since I started off following her, I decided to make a similar post with stories I've written.

Battlestar Galactica
Prophecy (on AO3) Kara Thrace/Leoben Conoy (or maybe just a Two, IDK), AU from mid-season three. 3400 words, PG-13. Since this story started the whole fic-writing hobby, I'm always going to be fond of it. But I also like the themes: outsiders trying to fit in, flipping the power imbalance in the relationship, defining our identities. None of that was consciously planned; it was just a story that insisted on being written.

Nemesis (on AO3) Jean Barolay and a Two on (old) Caprica. 4600 words, PG-13. Until "The Plan," Jean's backstory was technically undefined by canon; wearing a C-Bucs jacket didn't mean she had necessarily been on the team. So I wrote my own background for her and gave her interactions with a Two, and oh look: themes I love pop up again. Survival, destiny versus free will, symbolic dreams. This story was soooooo much fun to write. (Okay, it was work to write, but I really love the result.)

Jealous Gods (on AO3) Kara Thrace on New Caprica, with background Kara/Sam, Kara/Lee and unrequited Kara/Leoben. PG-13, under 1300 words. Though Kara was my favorite character on the show, I found her the most difficult to write. I think I got it right in this one. This is probably the most recced fic I've written, with the possible exception of one of my Yuletide fics.

Settlement (on AO3) and Lifeline (on AO3) Post-finale fic with an original female character and a Two. Both over 7000 words, rated R for lots of stuff (mind the warnings). I qualify these two stories (actually, there's a third in between, but I don't think it's as strong as these two) as my post-finale meta, complete with critique and appreciation for what BSG accomplished. Also, hey there themes! Assimilation, survival, identity, culture clashes. I swear, most of the time these aren't deliberately planned, they just happen because they're integral to the stories themselves.

Closer to the Sun (on AO3) Sam Anders, Jean Barolay, other C-Bucs and survivalists on (old) Caprica. NC-17 for themes (again, mind the warnings), 9400 words. "The Plan" was a mess, but I couldn't avoid writing fic for it, because I wanted to reconcile the starting point for these characters with their end. Plus, resistance fighters and survivalism made it irresistible. I worked on this off and on for two years before finally buckling down and getting it finished.

Life (NBC, 2007) I've written three fics for the show; two of them are on this list.
just what you'll say when you get home Ted Earley, Charlie Crews, Dani Reese. 3200 words, PG-13. This was written for my assigned recipient for Yuletide 2010. It surprised me how well I could channel the inner voice of a middle-aged white-collar crime convict on parole.

All Fall Down Rachel Seybolt, Charlie Crews (some UST), PG-13, 3800 words. Also written for Yuletide 2010, as an extra gift. I had already rewatched most of Life for my assignment, so at the last minute I dug through other people's requests and found one for Rachel/Charlie. My first reaction? Nuh-uh. And then I started writing and churned out nearly 4000 words in less than two days. Unsurprisingly, people responded more to the other story, featuring a character who appeared in every episode. But I really liked giving Rachel an ending to her storyline, and slipping over that edge of what Charlie represents for her made it all the more compelling for me to write.

Doctor Who Only four fics written for this fandom.
Rocketman (on AO3) Five times Mickey Smith thinks about kissing. Rated G, about 1500 words. I've never had much success in getting a five-times fic to work; this is an exception.

One story written for Parks and Recreation, and it was fleeting fluff. Two tiny fics written for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I meant to write more (Sarah/James!), but those stories never got beyond the note stage.

Person of Interest
Lowdown Groove (on AO3) Zoe Morgan/John Reese, set after 1.08 "Foe". Rated R, around 3500 words. I'm pleased with this one because I feel like I captured the fleeting attraction between Reese and Zoe. And because it was written after just one episode for Zoe, so go me.

A Picture's Worth... (on AO3) Zoe POV about 1.17 "Baby Blue", PG, around 800 words. Why this fic? Because it still makes me giggle.

How Low (on AO3) Don Moretti, Taylor Carter, John Reese--episode insert for 1.19 "Flesh and Blood". PG-13 for violence, just under 1900 words. It was... interesting, having a murderous mafia don dictate a story to me.

Nowhere Left to Run (on AO3) Joss Carter/John Reese, AU from the end of season one. Rated R, over 53000 words. I'm still not satisfied with a couple of tiny elements in this story, but overall it pleases me a lot. And who knew I could write a multi-chapter fic with plot, character development, action... all of that stuff?

Seven years of fic-writing summed up there. I still wish I wrote faster; stories that are started and done within two days are emphatically the exception.
