TV junkie report

I finished the twenty-nine episodes of Jericho. It was compelling to watch--not so much for the characters as for the narrative. Season one in particular, and yes, the great hive mind was right about the second half of the season: definitely better than the first half. I could wallow around in this kind of fictional survivalist world for a very long time.

The seven episodes of season two took a different turn; I enjoyed them as well, but not as much as season one.

Aside from the exploration of surviving after a nuclear attack (or more generally, just surviving when cut off from all big cities), I found myself very drawn to the storyline attached to Robert Hawkins. Actually , the Hawkins family are the characters I cared about the most, because they had the most complex backstory. Their interactions were so fraught with the tension from their many secrets and mysteries that I was riveted every time they were onscreen. Darcy, Robert, even Allison: I wanted more about them.

There's not a lot of fanfic for the show in the first place, so complaining about the lack of certain elements feels a bit pointless, but I'm still very disappointed that there are no stories out there focusing on any of the Hawkins family members.

Moving on, though, I've watched the first two episodes of Nikita (2010). So far I'm still planning to continue. I would say that episode two is much better than the pilot, but honestly, the two episodes are dependent on each other. (They should have aired back-to-back, I think. It would have made for a compelling debut.) Alex's story, for example, has a lot more resonance from the second episode than the first... and Nikita herself was able to show more emotion in the second episode.

Division is quite the villain in this. Ick. Bad secret not-quite-government agency, bad bad. Certainly Nikita gets a lot of leeway for her actions considering just how horrible her opponent is.

So far I find myself wincing more at the violence in the show than I do at, say, Person of Interest. Possibly because some of it is aimed at women, or maybe even because some of it is enacted by women. I don't know. But I have to say, it's really well-scripted violence when it's actual fighting.

And that's the TV report. Summer TV will probably continue to be via Netflix rather than what's currently airing. When I have the time, that is. School's not over yet, and when it is, I'll be busy with other things for a significant amount of time.

(Which leaves me wondering when I'll ever find the time to write utterly ridiculous pregnancy fic. I have notes, but no time to put them into a coherent form.)
