first half of season four of new Doctor Who

I have a few totally unorganized rambly thoughts about early season four of Doctor Who. I was absolutely floored at one of my initial reactions to Donna in the first couple of episodes. They were trying so hard to make me like her by showing what a great (non-romantic) match she was for the Doctor and I absolutely resented it! Apparently my Martha Jones love has gotten so all-encompassing that I didn't like having it shoved in my face that the Doctor has a great new pal and he's just fine, thanks.

It was very disconcerting and gave me this sudden understanding of how die-hard Rose fans felt about Martha when she was in this same position. And I hadn't even wanted Martha to stay with the Doctor! When she left him I thought it was exactly the right choice! (Though they did, in fact, show the Doctor grieving to some extent over the loss of Rose... but still. Replacements never have an easy job, no matter what.) When I realized what I was doing, I had a good laugh and decided to get over it. I had already liked Donna from "The Runaway Bride," and figured if I gave it enough time I'd like her again without feeling like my poor Martha was being ignored, oh woe the INJUSTICE OF IT ALL!

That makes my reaction to Martha's return a bit more incomprehensible, though. I was sort of... dreading it. Without seeing the next Martha episode I could happily imagine her in this nebulous place where nothing bad was happening and she was having a fantastic life. Thankfully her return didn't mess this up very much. *breathes sigh of relief* The two-parter on contemporary Earth ("The Sontoran Strategem" and some episode titled "Poison Skies" or something like that) was quite good and Freema Agyemang got to play herself and her alien double, which was fun to watch. Ah, Martha. She's so awesome and gorgeous and way too good for the Doctor and I hope that Tom knows what a lucky bloke he is.

Of course, the next episode when she goes tripping off on another alien adventure about broke my heart. Watching yet another being die for Martha while she was on another mission for the Doctor was very painful indeed. Speaking of that, the Doctor's actual daughter was unexpectedly odd. I'd been hearing about this Jenny, but I really didn't know much, it turns out. I'm wondering if she shows up again. (Don't tell me, I'm just wondering! I'll watch the rest of season four soon enough with Christmas vacation coming up.)

"The Unicorn and the Wasp" was thoroughly enjoyable. Probably more for me than for non-Agatha Christie fans, however. I'm suitably impressed with how many book title references they managed to work into the dialogue. (I read all of Christie's mystery novels before finishing high school. And a biography or two about her as well.)

Ugh, I seem to be coming down with some stomach bug. So I'm going to stop typing and put myself to bed early. Here's to hoping I don't have to miss work tomorrow, 'cause getting lesson plans ready for a sub is generally far worse than any actual illness. *sigh*
