a day for moms

While we tend to equate motherhood solely with maternity, in the Lord’s language, the word mother has layers of meaning. Of all the words they could have chosen to define her role and her essence, both God the Father and Adam called Eve “the mother of all living”-and they did so before she ever bore a child...

Few of us will reach our potential without the nurturing of both the mother who bore us and the mothers who bear with us. I was thrilled recently to see one of my youth leaders for the first time in years. As a teenager who had absolutely no self-confidence, I always sidled up to this woman because she would put her arm around me and say, “You are just the best girl!” She loved me, so I let her lead me. How many young men and women are desperate for your love and leadership?

Why my mother is particularly awesome

creation:
My mother looks for ways to create. It's not just the ongoing harp lessons (something she started doing only ten years ago) or the painting. She writes letters regularly, keeping us all in contact--to both family and friends. She conquered the computer and sends them by e-mail now. She gardens, cooks and bakes. She's a loving grandmother. She created a good home for her own children as they grew up.

listening and advising:
My mother listens sympathetically. She has excellent ideas when I need help. I didn't always value that, but I learned to appreciate it much more when I had adult responsibilities placed on my shoulders. When I'm upset or sick, she's the first person I want to talk to, even now. When I have good news, I want to share it with her. Because she listens with love, she's kept the lines of communication open with her friends, children and untold others I don't know about.

love and forgiveness in her relationships:
My mother has been an example to me in how she maintains her relationships. My dad isn't perfect (shocking, I know!) but she works with him in such harmony that you might think he's perfect anyway. *g* Even when we (her children) are being annoying and totally unlovable, she loves us and doesn't give up on us. She has friends whose lives have been heartbreaking and full of trials, and she's acted as their rock.

I could probably say a lot more but instead I'll give my mom a call now.
