I thought
this talk with David Mamet about truth in writing, especially writing about women, was very interesting. His quote that writers should be able to see and be willing to write the truth and that this willingness and ability to see and write the truth distinguishes the merely good from the ones that are worthy to listen to and read is something I needed to be reminded of. And I certainly agree with his point that the absence of sentimentality is a great thing in a writer. I appreciate that as well in a person and sentimentality is definitely not to be confused with sensitivity and kindness IMO. Sentimentality implies for me an absence of thought, an absence of being able and willing to question ones own motives and feelings and an absence of humor about the ridiculousness that goes hand in hand with the "big" feelings all too often. I appreciate people and artists who are willing and able to see and articulate that.
That's one of the things about the internet I appreciate so very much - the possibility to stumble upon an article like that and get something to think about.
And, after feeling quite sick again yesterday, today seems like a good day.
