I love Christmas.
Most of it - don't like how 'commercial' (all about the money - buying/selling, focusing on Santa and his gifts to 'all the good boys and girls', the shopping spree and fighting for the last item on the shelves, the extravagant gifts and kids demanding 'me, mine, myself') Christmas has become.
*pauses*
May have to rethink the office banquets and company feasts too.
I always eat too much at these free-for-alls.
But it is so hard to pass up the foods being offered - and in such huge quantities too!
Lets see ...
There was salad (real lettuce and spinach salad, choice of (slivered) almonds, (sliced) carrots, broccoli, sliced bell peppers, red onion, croutons, hardboiled eggs, sunflower seeds, olives, chopped bacon, and other 'rabbit food' toppings for this traditional veggie/side salad. (along with dressings - ranch, blue cheese, vinaigrettes, balsamic, etc). Mm, delicious!
Also on display/available to eat - Pasta salad, egg salad, potato salad, macaroni salad, and more salads. (I thought I saw a bean salad there too - but it was gobbled up quickly)
In addition to all the salads, there were several casseroles. I could only identify the green-bean casserole, tuna casserole, and the cheesy potato casserole.
For meat: deep-pit pork, shredded beef (complete with barbeque sauce), sliced ham, turkey, and chicken.
The Dessert table was absolutely loaded with cakes, pies, cheesecake, cookies, candy3canes, bite-sized chocolates (a lot of them Hershey) ice-cream, et cetera.
There was so much food to taste and try, that a heaping tablespoon -and no more - from each separate dish would soon overflow the huge (ginormous) potluck plates would soon be filled beyond capacity. That didn’t stop some from grapping two or three plates and balancing them all as they dished, scooped, and plopped huge servings of favorite dishes before heading over towards the drinks table.
(No alcohol or liquor based drinks were provided - this was a work sponsored party, with bosses and supervisors in attendance - but that didn’t mean the beverages were lacking - sparkling apple cider, carbonated water, teas, milk, juices, water, soda, hot chocolate, punch, the list goes on and on - almost overtook the tables alongside one wall)
Anyway, it took me about twenty minutes to grab my food, debating between several different appetizing recipies more than once. And even then - limiting myself to one plate, and only one small dessert (pecan pie, no whip cream or ice-cream topping, without the cherry, chocolate, or butterscotch and other flavored syrups I could have added) - I found I had taken too much.
Well, not taken too much meaning ‘if I watch anyone eat another bite I will barf’, but ‘*burp* that was a good meal. Can’t eat another bite,
Ate at lunch, wasn’t hungry at dinner time. Still not hungry - and it’s been over ten hours since I last ate.
That was a lot of food to eat in one sitting. Very delicious and tasty.
But I am So Very Glad I didn’t take any leftovers home.
Too bad it seems like people skimped on the fruit - I didn't see any apples or citrus. No oranges, no lemons or limes, no grapefruit, and no berries either. Unless the chocolate covered ones on the dessert table count.
Anyway, what I was saying ‘What I Love About Christmas time’
I love the family get-togethers (yes, even the ones where it is traditional to stuff oneself to the point of bursting), the trading of gifts (simple, thoughtful gifts, not the latest/greatest gadgets and expensive toys that will be in the trash within a month or two), the ability to spend time with loved ones, to sit back and relax, talking about this year’s events/next years plans, bemoaning the sports channel as favorite teams are loosing (wait, that’s my dad and sister. I don’t follow football), sharing favorite stories/recipes, and generally be merry as we remember the real reason for the season:
God giving his Son Jesus Christ so that the world might know life and grace, to be free from the chains of slavery and sin.
Most of the world has forgotten that special birth over two thousand years ago.
