*smacks head* Yep, you're right - I always end up turning it around in my head!

Oooo... I like the place! Yes, that's similar to the last place I stayed at, only you were actually on the beach. I made my reservation very late - only a couple of weeks beforehand - so all that was available was a little ways away from the beach, but there was still access.

Yep, the checkin room at the Castaways is like a tropical shack - *G*.

The shelling is very interesting. Let's see... I'm going to work my way... south... from Captiva.

Tween Waters had excellent shelling, with a larger number of conch shells (although still not big) and olive shells that any other places I've shelled.

The little public beach right at the start of Captiva (Blind Pass, where you cross over from Sanibel), with the little pier of rocks that people fish off of, is actually the best! The shells collect in a deep pile right where the beach meets the rocks, and you get a great mix, as well as it being very easy to shell.

The lighthouse beach was surprisingly abundant, with deep piles of shells all along the beach, and a lot more debris (eggcases, driftwood, etc.) than I've seen elsewhere, so it's interesting, but also a bit junky from all the stuff. So, tons of stuff, but messy. And tons and tons of LIVE scallops; so you actually had to try to avoid them, which was a pain (although they didn't smell).

I think, however, that it depends a lot on the weather, season, etc. Of course, I tried to pick my dates this time based on the tide charts. Low tide seems to almost always be at night; the best I could do was to find days when low tide was closest to dawn. Seemed to work great!

I'll probably post some Sanibel pics (mostly of birds/animals, but one or two of my pile of shells) some time.

I'm sorry I've taken so long to get back. Still not adjusted to new schedule at work and not getting enough sleep during the week.

I think Fighting conches (strombus alatus) are the biggest you're going to find out on Sanibel--they don't tend to get bigger than 3 or 4 inches. I don't think you find the Queen Conches (the big pink ones) above Key West and the Bahamas. I love the smooth shiny olives with theri cuneiform-like patterns.

Cool--I'll keep that shelling spot on the Captiva pass in mind.

Good for you to plot the tide patterns in advance!

I'll look forward to the pics. I still need to post pics from my trip their 2 years ago.:-P

What airport did you fly into, and did you rent a car to get onto Sanibel?

Still haven't posted my pics - so slooooow!

I flew into Ft. Myers and rented a car to get in and get around. Of course, you can bicycle, but since I'm into photographing, I like to be able to get around quickly in Ding Darling, so I drive.
