I think it is the nature of early youth at Christmas to be perched in a spring-loaded, Hobbesian-stance over the tree, whereupon the child finally falls asleep, but ever ready to get the drop on the presents as soon as the sun broke, heralding the morn.
I recently saw the joys of a child bouncing up and down awaiting the coming presents. I watched her tiny hands maul the thin wrapping paper to get at the desired contents. It was a refreshing sight. A friend made a cogent point: when it is a bunch of adults sitting around the tree, the tree opening traditions seem rather pointless, but with children, they are most delightful.
At the party I attended, I recieved as a Christmas present a framed photograph of the Fresno watertower (that also once housed their then tiny city library) memorializing a wonderful road trip I took with a very good friend of mine. I also got a year's supply of delightful hand-made brittle in variety of nut flavors.
Regardless of what holiday you celebrated this winter season, I hope it was so joyous.
