I spent yesterday afternoon watching 'The Mutants', a Doctor Who series with Jon Pertwee. The monsters were, of course, fairly ridiculous, but like so many stories from that era it had an ecological message. You can't just keep stripping resources from a planet and expect them to last forever. And there's danger in interfering with other cultures without first understanding them.
Then I watched the latest episode of this series - 'The God Complex'. As with the rest of this series, it was a cracking episode. Lots of running up and down corridors with doors that reveal scary things, and a chance for The Doctor to learn something about himself. Rita was a particularly good character, a person with a practical faith who spoke her mind ('That's one hell of a god complex you have, Doctor'). I would have loved her to be the next companion.
Was the ending a bit cosy? I don't think so. It's about time The Doctor had a chance to say 'goodbye' to his companions properly. As Amy said - he was saving them.
Karen Gillen makes my teeth itch but I like the way she plays Amy - and she gave a great performance as 'old Amy' and 'young Amy' in the previous episode. I'm not sorry to say goodbye to her and Rory, though.
The Minataur ended up as a sympathetic character and, of course, had parallels to The Doctor. Really looking forward to the last two episodes, although I wish there were more :(
Otherwise, yesterday was a nice, relaxed Saturday.
