Hi! This is me in Brno I have visited on duty. The weather was so-so, but the city was fun.
Ездил я на выставку, проходившую в громадном выставочном центре.
I visited an exhibition in the giant Exhibition Center.
Некоторые по нему даже на лошадях передвигаются.
Some even use horses to travel about.
Но жил я в Старом городе, и мой номер выходил на такую лестницу.
But my hotel was in the Old City and the room looked out onto such stairs.
По ней можно было дойти до Рыночной площади с Дитрихштейнским дворцом XVII в. Там квартировал, например, Кутузов.
I used it to get to the Market Square with the Dietrichstein Palace, the 17th c. It was home, eg to Kutuzov.
На той же площади забавные фонтанчики с крокодилами. Когда в Средние века в город привезли чучело крокодила, все решили, что это дракон. Так возникла легенда о «Брненском драконе».
Funny small fountains with crocodiles in the same square. When they brought a crocodile’s figure to the city back in the Middle Ages, everybody took it for a dragon. That's where the legend on the Brno Dragon has come from.
Доминантой Старого города является Петропавловский собор. Его начали строить ещё в XIII в.
The Old City is dominated by the SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral. Its construction started in the 13th c.
Изнутри он также впечатляет. Статуя Богородицы в центре датируется XIV в.
Its interior is not the less impressive. The Virgin figure in the center dates back to the 14th c.
За собором на склоне холма лежит Франтишков парк, разбитый ещё в 1818 году в честь победы над Наполеоном. Назван, естественно, в честь «победителя» - австрийского императора Франца I.
The Frantiskov Park is located behind the cathedral on a hill slope. It was created in 1818 in commemoration of the victory over Napoleon. The name was given of course after a “winner”, the then Austrian Emperor Franz I.
