Why Australia should declare itself a republic.

Jul 22, 2009 13:33

The short lived "Republic of North East Victoria" established by Ned Kelly was a concept that was rooted in the mismanagement of Australia by Mother England. Now, in the 21st century, a multi-ethnic, vibrant nation, Australia has no need of a foreign, far flung monarchy who has little use or need of the Antipodes save as a vacation destination. Doubtless some will see Harry as Prince of Larrikans but the Australian taxpayer would soon grow jaded of the excesses. The joke is only funny when the Pommies are paying. Australia should immediately declare it's intention of becoming a republic. This issue is not to the fore in New Zealand but a dozen or so commonwealth countries should discuss the continued need for a monarchy. It is an institution that has ceased to hold any relevance or role in the lives of Australians.
