Towards a definition of ghosts.

What is a ghost? I have been told that it is an undead, unsettled spirit. It cannot talk (no vocal chords), speaking with a ghost is rare indeed. Best theory I heard was that they were akin to an image on a photograph or to use a modern analogy a video tape not properly wiped. Do lay lines have any part to play in the supernatural?
Ghosts seem to have "half lives" an Essex one was reported of a Roman legionnaire but most are far more modern.
Poltergeist activity often happens around pubescent girls, the Russians (or Soviets) worked on telekinesis and other things). The paranormal is not confined to Christianity, it is seen in Islam and other major world faiths. Finally, how far and wide are the realms of the unseen?
