At 6:39 AM, EST, I am on Flight 6234; wheels down in Detroit at 8:07AM. For the next hour and a half, I get a fun-filled whirlwind tour of the Detroit airport. At 9:29AM, I'm on Delta 3033 to San Diego.
Yes, I'm heading to Southern California for seven eight days.
I'm looking forward to it. I deserve a vacation, and I'm looking forward to going someplace I've never been.
It's been a pretty stressful past few months.
The last few weeks of the quarter were bruising. My Molecular Epidemiology project fought me tooth and nail; I know the material on uranium quite well, but it wouldn't come together. My Structural Equation Model was similarly frustrating. Work has been grueling; I've put in 8, 9 or 12 hour days the last two weeks.
Some of it has been highly rewarding; I've found an explanation for some of the health effects we've been seeing, even with some lousy exposure estimates. And I always enjoy going out and working with people, which I got to do on Wednesday and Thursday. Especially little kids; I interviewed a few on Wednesday as part of the River project. One boy had me throw his sister out of the interview room; he then stormed off to tell off my boss when she tried to come into the room! Another little girl had almost perfect recall about her addresses, drinking water stuff and the like. But it's also exhausting; six hours interviewing people sans AC guts you.
I think I've spent more on clothes than I did on the tickets to San Diego. Most of my wardrobe looks like it's been through the wars - holes, rents and tears everywhere. Without the machine-gunned shirts, pants and boxers, I don't have enough clothes to go a week without a laundromat. Even my shoes are cracked through the entire soles(sandals), torn (boots) or so scuffed they won't hold a polish. So far I've bought three polos, three other T-shirts, and a pair of blue jeans. I still need at least six more pairs of boxer shorts, a new swim suit (I'm thinking prolly red boardshorts with flowers on them), a goofy soft white shirt for the beach, and new shoes.
The house problems haven't helped. Neither has trying to date.
So I've taken the week off, and I'm heading to California very early tomorrow morning.
