Episode 5: Aya's Inner Turmoil

The stunned silence only lasted a few seconds before Aya said, “No I’m not, you moron.”

With that, he walked right out of the apartment. Daishi looked at Lida. “You mean, I’m seeing things? Is this a common hangover side effect?”

Lida shook his head. “No, we all saw him wearing a skirt…” He didn’t seem to know what to say next.

Seek looked at Yura. “Well, one of us should really go after him, and see if he’s all right!”

“He looked fine,” Yura said, lying back down on the couch.

Seek sighed, and left the apartment without another word. Aya was outside smoking, but because he had his backpack with him, Seek had to wonder if he was waiting for a taxi or something. “Is everything all right, Aya?”

“Why would you assume something’s wrong?” Aya retorted, obviously expecting Seek to ask such a question.

Seek scratched his head. “Well, you know…because you…never mind. You look very pretty today.” He smiled.

Aya looked at him, but did not return the smile. “I know,” he said before he dropped his cigarette, squashing it beneath his boot. “Shouji’s picking me up. I’ll see you guys at school.”

“Shouji?” Seek queried.

But Aya ignored him as he walked down the apartment steps to wait on the sidewalk. He sighed, and went back inside. He found that the others had their hangover cures he had made them, so instead of returning to the kitchen, he knocked Yura’s legs off the couch to sit there. Yura opened his eyes before flinging his legs back on Seek’s. “So why is Aya-chan dressed like a girl today?” He asked, as though making small talk.

Seek shook his head. “I have no idea. He didn’t seem to want to talk. On top of that, Shouji’s picking him up, so he-“

“My brother?” Lida cut in. “Ew.”

Daishi snorted. “What a weird thing to say, Lida!”

Seek’s brow furrowed. “Really, what do you mean?”

Lida shrugged. “Just…that it would be gross if they started dating or something.”

Yura gasped and sat up. “What are you talking about!? Aya is already in a relationship!”

“Relax, Yura, I was just being a smartass,” Lida cut in with a sigh.

Seek nodded. “Well, we can’t talk about it right now because we’re going to be late for school! Hurry up, everybody!”

He bounced up, as did Yura and Daishi. “Come on, Lida!” Daishi exclaimed, grabbing Lida’s arm and pulling.

Lida sighed and stood up. “Let’s just get this day over with.”

“What!?” Daishi gasped. “Lida-kun, the first day of school is always fun and interesting!”

* * * * *

Roman Hikou University was a fairly big school, with lots of reddish colored buildings, a large courtyard complete with a fountain, and more trees than you could shake a stick at. Daishi’s eyes were already sparkling as he pressed his face to the window and looked out at it. “Can you believe we’re in college?” He asked, disbelief lining his voice. “I mean, I could swear that just yesterday I was meeting you, Lida.”

He looked over his shoulder at the redhead. Lida didn’t seem nearly as enthused as he did about being at another school, but he offered a pathetic smile for his boyfriend. It was enough for Daishi, and he pressed his face back against the window.

Of course, things only started to get worse after that. First Seek couldn’t locate the parking pass they had bought a week before class. They turned the car upside down trying to find it, but it was no use; so they all had to donate some money so that they could park in the visitor garage. Unfortunately, the garage was much further from the main school buildings than the parking lot they were supposed to be in, so as soon as they had paid they found themselves sprinting as fast as they could so they wouldn’t be late to their classes.

Right away, Daishi felt a little insecure. He had to go to the science building for his first class, while Seek, Lida and Yura all went to a different building. “We’ll have lunch together!” Lida hollered behind him.

Daishi watched them dash down the sidewalk for a moment before he sighed and entered the science building. The moment he stepped into his chemistry class room he felt unbelievably overwhelmed. There were so many students, and so many scientific instruments! He swallowed, and made his way up to the front row, sitting down next to a young man with tattoos on his arms. “Hi,” he said, his tone showing off the nervousness he felt. “I’m Daishi. This is my first day here.” He immediately realized how dumb that sounded, being that it was the first day of school, and all.

The other smiled. “Freshman? This is my third year here. It’s not a bad school once you’ve gotten used to the way things work. My name is Kenji.”

“Nice to meet you, Kenji,” Daishi said with a grin, feeling much better since he felt he was forming a friendship.

Unfortunately, that was the only friend he made all day. No one else was as kind as Kenji, and right away his teachers piled homework on him-much more than what he was used to in high school. He was so relieved to go to the cafeteria after his second class. He spotted Lida sitting at a table, but there were two girls there with him! His brow furrowed, and he tried not to stomp over there. He dropped his backpack loudly on the table, bringing a halt to the laughter of the girls. “Hi, Lida,” he said to his boyfriend.

Lida smiled up at him. “Oh, hey, D. I was wondering when you were going to get here. My class got out early so I got over here to get us a table. Good thing, too, since the room filled up pretty fast.” He motioned around to all the other occupied tables.

“I see,” Daishi said stiffly, glancing at the two girls.

Lida stood. “Well, let’s go get some food. I’ll pay for you.”

Daishi gave a stoic nod. The two girls smiled at Lida, and one said, “That’s so sweet of you!”

“Yes, incredibly sweet,” Daishi said sarcastically, grabbing Lida’s arm, and dragging him to the food shack.

“Why are you so upset?” Lida asked, looking at Daishi with concern. “Did something happen?”

“Who are those girls!?” Daishi burst.

Lida blinked a couple of times, and then chuckled. “I don’t even remember their names. They’re from my English class. Since there were no tables, and they recognized me, they asked if they could share our table. What was I supposed to do? Say no because my boyfriend might get jealous?”

Daishi blushed. “Well, what am I supposed to think when I come out and see you sitting with two girls?”

“You’re supposed to think that there must be an innocent explanation because I wouldn’t cheat on you!” Lida said with an exasperated sigh.

“But I know you like girls!” Daishi countered.

Lida grabbed his hands. “But I like you more.”

A guy walking by gave them a shocked and appalled glance, but neither saw him. Daishi nodded, feeling a little embarrassed. “I’m sorry. I’ve had a bad morning, so I just jumped to conclusions…”

“It’s all right,” Lida shrugged, letting go of one of Daishi’s hands so they could walk side by side down the aisle. “Why did you have a bad morning?”

So Daishi told him, and Lida offered up his sympathies (as well as a promise to make Daishi feel better later). He bought their lunches, and they returned to the table. The girls were just finishing their own food, and they stuck their pearly white smiles back on. “Is this your friend, Lida-kun?”

“I’m even closer than a friend,” Daishi said quickly. “I’m the most important person in Lida’s life.”

“Awww, best friends!” One girl cooed. “That’s so sweet!”

Daishi glared at her. “I said we are more than friends!”

The two girls giggled, and one said, “Kawaii!”

They got up and left, being sure to sway their hips for Lida as they called good-bye to him. Daishi ripped open his bag of chips much more ferociously than he needed to. “God, how can you even like girls? They’re so annoying and stupid!”

Lida shook his head. “Not all girls are like those two, Daishi. A lot of girls are very nice.”

Daishi made a face. “Not any girls that like you. I refuse to like those ones.”

Lida chuckled. “Just remember that you’re the most important person in my life.”

Daishi smiled. “They were right when they said you were sweet.”

* * * * *

Seek sat at a different table, but he was watching Lida and Daishi every once in awhile. He had felt that it wasn’t his place to bother them since they would probably rather be alone. He could easily guess that Daishi didn’t like the girls who had been eating with Lida. After their departure he was sure to want his lover all to himself.

Seek sighed, and leaned his head against his hand. He wished his two lovers had planned their lunch break to coincide with his. He felt so lonely sitting all by himself… He was so concerned for Aya’s well-being, too! It wasn’t that he didn’t like his friend wearing skirts, it was just so odd. For more than a year Aya had dressed as a boy, and he’d been very pleased to be able to. What could have caused him to put on make up and panty hose again after he’d sworn them off for so long?

After a few more minutes he had to get up so he wouldn’t be late to his biology class. He was really excited about it, because he loved science, and he loved learning about living things, and biology was both.

Once in the class room he settled into a seat, and took out his textbook, workbook, and a notebook for writing notes in. He headed his paper, and grinned to himself as he started doodling on the page. First he drew a frog. Next he drew a snake that ended up becoming a border for the rest of the paper. Then he started on a picture of a chibi Yura chasing a chibi Aya, but he was only halfway finished when the teacher caught the attention of the class by saying loudly, “Everyone, get a good look at your table, and the person sharing it with you. That table is yours for the rest of the semester, and that person is your lab partner for the rest of the semester.”

The room fell deathly silent as everyone looked at the person sitting beside them. For Seek it was a pretty, petite girl with very long hair, and bangs that almost came into her face. She smiled. “Hi, I’m Emiko.”

He smiled back, glad that she hadn’t flinched or groaned. That’s what people often did in high school when he sat next to them. After all, he had always been the weird one that no one wanted to be associated with… “I’m Seek,” he said.

Her smile grew a little, and she covered her mouth to stifle a giggle. “That’s an exotic name!”

He blushed. “Oh, well, it’s not my real name, of course. My real name is Takuma. I guess Seek is just my nickname. Although…it actually sounds nothing like Takuma…” He scratched his head, pondering for a moment why he was called Seek, and where the nickname had its origin.

She continued to smile, and said, “My family and friends call me Emi, so I know what you mean. You can call me Emi, too, if you like.”

He grinned. “And you can call me Takuma, if you like.”

She chuckled, and he chuckled, too. She didn’t seem annoyed or upset, though, so he was glad. Perhaps people are simply friendlier in college, he thought to himself.

* * * * *

Aya was so glad his last class got out before all of his roommates’ did. He would be able to have the apartment all to himself until they got home, which was something he was looking forward to.

He sat down on one of the steps outside of the university hall so he could wait for Shouji, who had promised to meet him there. His last class ended the same time as Aya’s, so he was the perfect person to take him home. Of course, Aya felt a little guilty for ditching the others like he had that morning, but it was something he just had to do. He didn’t feel like explaining his actions either-not even to Seek. Perhaps especially not to Seek.

He heard the door behind him open, but he was content to ignore it as he stared out at nothing. A pair of shoes started down the steps, stopping on the step below him. The owner of the shoes sat down beside Aya, so he had to turn his head, giving the other an annoyed glare. That was when he noticed the designer clothes, the flowing locks of hair, and the perfectly symmetrical face. “Oh, hi, Yura,” he said sardonically before staring ahead again.

“You know, none of us appreciate the way you’re acting,” Yura got straight to the point. “You’ve really got Seek upset. Why can’t you tell us what’s wrong? We’re your lovers, and we want to help you! Well, not Lida and Daishi, but they’re your friends, so they want to help, too! Don’t we tell each other everything, Aya-chan? Best friends?”

Aya shook his head. “We probably tell each other less than you know.”

Yura gasped, and was silent for a moment as he stared at Aya, and Aya stared at nothing. Finally he figured out something to say. “Then we should probably tell each other more.”

Aya didn’t want to answer, and he didn’t have to because he spotted Shouji walking down the pathway then. He stood up, slinging his backpack over his shoulder. “That’s my ride. See you at home.”

Yura said nothing as Aya met with Shouji, and the two walked out to the parking lot his car was in. “So how was the first day?” He asked. “College sucks, doesn’t it? I want to go back to elementary school. Remember elementary school? Damn, those were the good days. We got to buy those little square pizzas in the cafeteria, and there was always a recess right after lunch, and the teachers put little stickers on our tests next to the scores…”

Aya was quiet as he slipped into the passenger side. Shouji started driving, and neither said anything for a little while. At last the older sighed, and said, “What the hell is your problem?”

Aya shrugged. “I don’t want to talk about it. I think I’m having identity issues or something. I don’t know, I’m hoping I’ll figure it out by the time I’m done with psych this semester.”

Shouji chuckled. “Yeah. Just be careful, psych is a depressing subject most of the time. Especially if you start thinking stuff applies to you.”

Aya raised an eyebrow. “You took psych?”

Shouji shook his head. “I dropped out after the first two weeks. We were talking about dysfunction in families, and I just didn’t want to listen. I don’t come from the most functional family, you know.”

“Neither do I,” Aya muttered.

They said no more the rest of the way. When Aya got out, and Shouji left, he proceeded in changing into his underwear, and plopping down on the couch to watch TV until the others got home. He didn’t even want to be around any of them, and that thought was a heavy one on his heart.
