Nipping at her neck, he lifted the raven-haired witch onto the potions table and moved his hands to her breasts, teasing her nipples through her blouse. Giggling, Pansy elbowed his arms aside and then deftly unbuttoned his shirt. Draco closed his eyes as her soft hands glided over his skin and lightly massaged his back, eliciting groans of appreciation. These blissful, stolen moments with her made his cursed existence seem almost bearable.

"Someday," Draco said, jerking her hips to the edge of the table, "I'll have you."

"And I shall have you," she whispered, kissing his bare chest.

He pressed the front of his trousers between her thighs, and she wrapped her legs around his waist. If only they didn't have to wait… Losing himself in the familiarity of her scent and touch, he settled for rubbing against her moist knickers and snogging her dizzy.

When he was the focus of Pansy's loving attentions, Draco felt uncommonly strong and important, rather than weak and insignificant as he often suffered these days. It had always been this way with her. Sometimes he needed Pansy so much he ached, yet he kept that to himself, unsure if he'd ever reveal his secret.

"Do you want me to…" she asked, sliding her hands down his torso.

"Yeah," he said quickly, pushing against her.

Just as Pansy unbuttoned his trousers, the most horrible, wretched sensation assaulted him. He gasped and gripped the table so hard, it dug into his palms.

Pansy stopped. "Did I do something?"

"No! It's… I-I must go…"

"What? Why?"

When the pain ebbed, he pushed up his left sleeve and showed her the angry black Mark.

She took a sharp breath and shook her head. "No…"

"I need to find out what's going on."

"I'll come with you."

"No! Go to bed. You'll be safe there."

She gave him an incredulous glare but did not argue.

Draco quickly buttoned his shirt, while she jumped from the table and smoothed her skirt.

Holding hands, they dashed into corridor, almost colliding with Crabbe and Goyle.

"Malfoy!"

"What's happening?" asked Goyle.

"Don't know," Draco said. "I'm going to find Snape."

"Us too!"

The three wizards Disillusioned.

As Draco heard Crabbe and Goyle's footsteps thunder away, he glanced back.

Leaning against the cold stone wall, she looked so… unhappy.

"Pansy…"

She startled, and he remembered he was invisible.

"Go to bed."

"Be careful, Draco."

He darted through the dungeon labyrinth and then up the stone steps into the moonlit Entrance Hall. Sprinting across the flagstone to the main stairway, Draco wondered when he'd catch up with Crabbe and Goyle.

Upstairs, he spied Amycus Carrow, sporting a sneer while trotting away from his office. Draco followed cautiously, but by the time he reached the next staircase, Carrow was gone. Searching the floor above, he didn't see or hear anyone. He pushed through a gap between tapestries into a passageway to the next level -- toward Snape's office.

There he saw a sudden flash of light at the end of the long corridor, and it was coming straight for him! Draco pressed his back against the wall as a cat made of silvery light streaked past him.

A Patronus!

Draco saw a figure hurrying from where the Patronus had originated, and then Snape unexpectedly emerged from a portrait, just ahead of Draco. At the sight of Professor McGonagall in a tartan dressing gown, Snape slipped behind a suit of armour. When McGonagall stopped abruptly, Snape moved out of the shadows into the torch light.

Straining to hear their conversation, Draco slithered closer. They were arguing.

The scene became more surreal when McGonagall and Snape began duelling using magic Draco had never seen before. Their power, speed, and agility were astonishing. For his own safety, Draco backed into an alcove and peered out to watch them battle.

It looked like Snape had the upper hand, but then tiny Professor Flitwick scurried past and joined McGonagall in opposition to Snape. When Professor Sprout bustled by, wearing what appeared to be a sack and a patchwork nightcap, Draco thought things couldn't get any more bizarre. That's when Professor Slughorn chugged past in enormous emerald-green pyjamas.

Suddenly, there was a loud clatter. Snape escaped into the classroom across the hallway from Draco. McGonagall was in rapid pursuit, followed by Sprout and Flitwick. As they entered the classroom, there was a crash and the sound of breaking glass.

"Coward!" shrieked McGonagall.

Instinctively, Draco stepped from the alcove but then froze. Harry Potter and Luna Lovegood appeared from under an Invisibility Cloak, and they entered the classroom too.

Potter! If I capture him, my family will be forgiven!

Before Draco could do anything, Slughorn huffed up and blocked the doorway. Draco remained absolutely still and listened.

"He's coming now!" Potter shouted.

"He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is coming!" McGonagall said.

Merlin!

"Potter has work to do on Dumbledore's orders."

I can tell the Dark Lord this…

"Gather the students and meet in the Great Hall," McGonagall ordered. "Most must be evacuated, but those of age can stay to fight."

They're fighting? They have no idea what they're up against!

Slughorn finally moved from the doorway, and Sprout left, muttering about Tentaculas.

Draco stealthily entered the classroom and noticed the hole in the window.

Snape flew away!

"Professor Flitwick, have you got any idea where the diadem of Ravenclaw is?" Potter asked.

"Nobody has seen it in living memory!" Flitwick replied between casting spells through the hole in the window.

Diadem? What is that? Maybe the Dark Lord wants it too!

"He is bound to find a way in," Slughorn was lecturing, "and anyone who has tried to delay him will be in most grievous peril--"

"I shall expect the Slytherins in the Great Hall in twenty minutes," interrupted McGonagall. "If you wish to leave, we won't stop you. But if any of you attempt to take up arms against us within this castle, then, Horace, we duel to kill! The time has come for Slytherin House to decide upon its loyalties."

Our loyalties are to Slytherin House alone! A Gryffindor would never understand that!

Brandishing her wand, McGonagall left the classroom reciting complex incantations. Potter and Lovegood followed with wands drawn.

Potter's got my wand! I want it back!

Draco jogged after them. His footsteps were muffled by the racket of McGonagall's animated statues and armour. Unknowingly, Potter and Lovegood led him right to the Room of Requirement.

I'm going to need help!

Using every secret passageway he knew, Draco raced back to the dungeons.

Crabbe and Goyle were standing just inside the common room, while Slughorn issued instructions to a roomful of sleepy Slytherins.

"Listen carefully…" Draco said, sneaking up on them.

"Malfoy?" Goyle said loudly. "Where's Snape?"

"Shhh!" Draco hissed. "Disillusion and go up to the seventh floor. Keep quiet and wait for me."

"Why should we?" challenged Crabbe.

"You'll be rewarded."

The pair looked gleefully maniacal and immediately left the common room.

Draco scanned the chaos for Pansy and then heard her voice.

"Everyone out of the dorms! Now!"

Several witches scampered out, followed by his girlfriend wearing only a nightgown.

Draco grabbed her from behind; she stiffened but didn't scream.

"It's me," he whispered, ushering her into his dorm room.

Closing the door, Draco ended the Disillusionment Charm.

"You're okay," Pansy said, clinging to him

He could feel her soft curves through the thin fabric, which made her seem entirely too vulnerable.

"What's really happening, Draco?"

"The Dark Lord is coming."

"W-What are we going to do?" she asked fearfully.

"I'm going to…"

"Please, Draco, let's go far away! Remember we talked about…"

"Father said they can track my Mark. If we run, they'll kill us both -- and our families."

"Then what can we do?"

"I know where Potter is."

"He's here?"

"Yeah. When I capture him, my family will be forgiven -- and rewarded."

"Oh, Draco…"

They heard the Slytherins leaving the dungeons. Time was running out.

"Pansy, listen. When McGonagall says how to get out of the castle, leave immediately."

"No! I want to help you!"

"I don't need your help!"

"Draco!"

"Just go home!"

Pansy looked hurt, but she had to leave!

"Promise me you'll go!" Draco said, grabbing her shoulders and staring into her eyes. "Swear it!"

"I-I can't…"

"Promise me!"

"Draco…"

"Promise to go home…for me," he pleaded.

Her resolve was crumbling…

He kissed her to make sure.

"Okay."

"Say it."

She sighed. "I promise, Draco."

Snatching his best cloak, he covered her bare shoulders and fastened the clasp at her throat. Pansy was staring at him, but he couldn't look into her eyes -- not now. He needed to focus on other things.

Draco Disillusioned and took Pansy's hand. They reached the ground floor just as the Slytherins filed into the Great Hall.

This was real.

I could die tonight.

It was time to grow-up and face his fears.

Draco brushed his lips against Pansy's and -- for the very first time -- whispered, "I love you."

Then he left.
