Jayne’s lips were dry, cracked like the sun baked desert he staggered across. He was an empty vessel, his hope waning, driven only by instinct.
In the distance, little pools of water wavered in the heat, teasing him with their false promise. The intense yearning for one cool drop of those sun sparked mirages motivated his heavy limbs forward.
In the end, he thought he’d be taken out differently. Most like a bullet through the heart or plummeting wildly out of the sky on that crap ship of Mal’s. Not ever like this.
For hours, it was barren land and gleam, until a slim figure haloed in long, dark hair wavered in the distance. Jayne rubbed his burning eyes and blinked twice to test his hallucination.
As River Tam continued to walk towards him, he sped up, limping into a desperate sprint towards someone he’d never admit reminded him of home.
When they met, Jayne collapsed to his knees with exhaustion, nothing more beautiful than the sight of the tangible. Even if it had to be her.
“Found you.” She chirped like it was a game. Kneeling at his level, she smiled as she unscrewed the cap to her canteen.
