[Gabranth isn't sure just what he's doing on another beach, nor why this one has apparently seen fit to discard his swords and armor. Nor is he fully aware of whatever "scavenger hunt" he's been expected to participate in; no, there are far greater things weighing on his mind ( Read more... )

[The Fool is sitting on the rocks behind him, carving a bit of driftwood.]

What happened? I've never seen you look so unthreatening.

[He briefly glances back at the Fool. Somehow, he's in no mood to feel even the slightest indignation at his words.]

All I have gained in this world has been lost to me.

That bad?

[Tucks away his knife and his carving and pulls his glove back on, sliding off the rocks to join Gabranth by the sea]

[He isn't sure why this man seems so interested, but what reason has he to refuse?]

[Bows his head in response and is silent for a long moment]

I will never doubt that it toys with us, but...

[Shrugs, and bends to pick up a stone, tossing it from hand to hand]

We can't know. If Rodney was right and this world is a construct, an illusion, then perhaps she was taken out of the illusion for a while. Or perhaps all the worlds we've been to exist in parallel, and she's out of sync.

[Bends again to pick up another couple of stones without dropping the one he's got, and starts juggling them properly, absent-mindedly]

Perhaps she's here, and we can't see her. Perhaps she's outside the time we're in. Perhaps she and the others have been sent to a different world, there to await release. When I'm in this world I can't tell what might happen. It's like being blindfolded. But that doesn't mean I can't guess.

[Closes his eyes and speeds up the juggling]

You shouldn't stop hoping. Fate has the strangest ways of bringing people back together.
