Thanksgiving Glances

► Thanksgiving dinner at Dad and Claire's actually went well. Had a nice meal with ham, although I'm still dying to have a real home cooked turkey and gravy dinner (since it's now been a few years). I was given 5 slices of leftover ham and a small tub of mashed potatoes, which I'm looking forward to frying up for supper tomorrow. God, how I love friend mashed potatoes... It's been awhile since I've had that, too.

There were more people than I expected for supper. My brother and my sister-in-law came by, as did my younger sister and her two young kids. I was dismayed and sad at how my two and a half year old niece Abby kept acting around me. Just this past spring we had the kids over to the apartment for the weekend, and Abby would sit on my lap and watch cartoons. Today, each time I'd ask her for a hug she'd say no and run away. When my brother arrived, the first thing she did was run up to him and hug his legs. And all this time I thought I was the nice uncle.

All of this came to a sublime and ridiculous climatic moment, after supper. Abby was standing near were my sister and I were standing, and I leaned down to scoop her up under her armpits. She violently flung herself to the floor before I could lift her, and started bawling. Brett, my sister, crouched down and rubbed and comforted Abby, who quickly calmed down. She then stood back up, and started walking toward the hallway to the TV room as Brett and I watched.

Just as she was about to enter the hall, Abby stopped, and slowly turned her head to look back over her shoulder at me, with a sinister sneering look of contempt. I was stunned, never seeing a dagger sharp look from a two and a half year old, while Brett howled with laughter.

It was hysterical.

► While I'm not entirely sure why, the term "reboot" annoys me when it's used to refer to a new movie that ignores an earlier one and goes back to the original source material (whether they were based on comics, books, TV shows, or anything else). My suggestion is a new term: Re-Adaption.

Edit: It's been pointed out to me that it should be "Re-Adaptation". I'm sure either is fine.

► I think Scarlett Johansson looks a lot better as Black Widow in the pictures I've seen for the upcoming Avengers film than she did in Iron Man 2. There's just something about the new outfit that I think translates better as the character (for me, at least), than the rather blandly generic look from the previous film.

10 More Classic ‘Doctor Who’ Adventures For New Fans To Check Out - If only the classic series DVDs weren't so expensive on Amazon.ca. I'd love to get a bunch of the Third, Fourth and Fifth Doctor DVDs.

Image of the Day: Giant 'Mrs. Doubtfire' Tattoo - Seriously, in 15 to 20 years laser tattoo removal will be a booming industry. Start investing now!

10 Actors Who Should Play Blofeld In BOND 23 - Of their choices, I most like the idea of either Toby Jones, Mark Strong, or Brendan Gleeson as Blofeld.

Indistinguishable From Magic: Why Cleavage is Bad for Crimefighting - I'll never understand why so many people get hung up on Power Girl and Wonder Woman's costumes. Why split hairs over a bustier or a cleavage window when you're talking about characters from other dimensions or empowered by the gods, who fly, ripe through concrete and steel like tissue paper, and shoot laser beams from their eyes? The very fact that Power Girl can fly well past supersonic speeds without her clothing burning and ripping off her is fantastic enough. That she has a boob window is not that ridiculous in comparison to everything else.

"Realism" makes for very boring and bland superhero comic books. Besides, what the hell is so damn wrong with some sex appeal?

The Mobile Babes: Girls With iPhones - As irritated I've been with all the constant messages in my email and postings on my sites about Steve Jobs death, I will say I'm glad he helped facilitate this phenomenon.

As I said posted on Facebook Wednesday evening: "If I get one more notice in my email about Steve Jobs death........... I'm going to delete that one too."

Cracked.com: 7 Classic Movies You Didn't Know Were Rip-Offs - As a movie lover, discovering stuff like this is a bit soul crushing. If you try to tell stories and get into making movies, Hollywood destroys you. If you avoid it and seek other avenues, Hollywood steals from you. I love Grant Morrison all the more for his stance on the Matrix movies ripping him off.

Also, Reservoir Dogs being completely stolen from City on Fire is old hat, and one of the reasons my appreciation for Quentin Tarantino died not long after Jackie Brown (which I believe is actually his best film, but no one seems to remember it). Tarantino doesn't make movies, he makes fan films.
