My Superman Movie Idea

► For some time now I've had an idea in my head for the next Superman movie. As mentioned in links I've posted, Warner Bros is currently shepherding a new reboot Superman movie with Christopher Nolan producing and Zack Snyder slated to direct. Currently the rumours circling have the film about a young Clark Kent traveling the globe trying to decide whether to become Superman. I think that would be a mistake, since Smallville is currently and for 10 years, has been doing the exact same take on the character.

My idea is to do a loose sequel to Superman Returns. By loose sequel, I mean build on what happened in that film, without having to directly reference it or contradict it. To me the 3 biggest problems with Superman Returns were Kate Bosworth miscast as Lois Lane (I felt she seemed too fragile and not spunky enough; I'd cast Rachel McAdams), the misstep of having Superman sire a child (making Superman appear to be an absentee father, whether accurate or not) and too many homages to the 1978 Superman movie (Lex Luthor's scheme was essentially the same).

All that aside, lets use Returns as the jumping off point. The basic plot outline for my movie idea is this:- Superman was away in space for 5 years, but has now been back on Earth for a year or two. The Daily Planet is investigating rising incidents of technological and scientific crimes and thefts (we'd see scenes of Superman handling them). Lois and Clark begin suspecting that someone may be behind these incidents.

- Meanwhile, Lois' young son Jason is beginning to exhibit bizarre symptoms. One moment he's incredibly weak and fragile, the next he's super-humanly strong. Lois would take the boy to a genetic scientist introduced earlier (possibly Dr. Emil Hamilton) who would run some tests and discover that the boy is not truly human or Kryptonian. The first act of the film would end with Jason suddenly rapidly aging and growing, mutating, becoming an imperfect, monstrous double of Superman.

- Jason, now dubbed Bizarro (by the rival tabloid Daily Star), thinks that he's Superman and begins flying around the world trying to stop disasters and crime, inadvertently causing mayhem. Superman confronts the pitiful boy/monster and they fight. The scientist (Dr Hamilton) discovers that Jason is actually a genetically engineered clone. Lois (as evidenced in Superman Returns) never remembered who the boy's father was, because she has no memory. It would be revealed that she was either artificially implanted by an unseen entity, or that the boy, a baby, was just left with her. No one remembers this because something has altered their memories.

- After many fight scenes, and investigating, the mystery would lead Superman and Lois to the Fortress of Solitude. There, they would discover the truth. Prior to Superman's 5 year absence, an alien being crashed to Earth. He discovered Superman's Fortress and took up residence. From there he was able to orchestrate all the events that followed. The discovery of Krypton that lead Superman to leave was his influence. This being sought to trick Superman into leaving and take over the Earth. Able to access all the data streams and information in the world, he created and implanted cloned Superman (Jason) to be his minion and muscle should Superman ever return. The villain is Brainiac.

- The third act of the film would see Brainiac unleash the first prototype of his new army to destroy Superman. Another even more monstrous clone, Doomsday. Superman would then battle this seemingly indestructible monster. Jason/Bizarro, still loose, would find his way North to Lois. Reasoning with the being that she had raised as her own child, she would finally reach him through the haze of his fractured thoughts, and Bizarro would fly to Superman and help him destroy Doomsday, but at the cost of his own life. Dying in Superman's arms.

- Enraged, Superman would then fly back to the Fortress of Solitude for the final confrontation with Brainiac. The alien being would taught Superman, revealing that he travels the galaxy devouring and storing all the information from each inhabited planet he comes across, and then destroys them. He was the reason Krypton was destroyed, and it was he who orchestrated Jor-El's findings being ignored. Trying to destroy Superman, Brainiac would unleash the rest of his Doomsday clone army, but they're not fully formed and Superman easily cuts through the monsters. Finally, reaching Brainiac, and discovering that the villain is no more than a robot. Defeating Brainiac, Superman would then destroy the Fortress of Solitude, burying the remains of the evil computer forever. The film would likely then end with a funeral for Jason/Bizarro, who died saving the world.
So, that's my idea for a Superman movie. Granted it's quite a bit darker (and only just a loose outline), but I think it'd give a lot of potential for incredible action and fight scenes, and play on a lot of the science fiction elements of Superman that tend to get ignored in the films. Plus, it'd allow us to introduce 3 of Superman's villains: Brainiac, Doomsday and Bizarro.

Not like it's going to get made.
