"MONSTERS JIM, MONSTERS FROM THE ID" Chapter X (Part II, CH iii)

Feb 05, 2007 22:56

This chapter installs our humble narrator in his new prison. Here he is in much better conditions, his own private cell, magazines. I bet he forgot to mention the Mini-fridge. Before he leaves he signs his life away, and we hear a teary goodbye from the Prison Charlie. The Charles makes an excellent point: if you choose to stop being able to choose bad, is that choosing to be good on a non-case-by-case basis?

I do think that if Alex had actually understood what he would go through, he wouldn't go through with it. He would never want to not be able to choose violence. He would never (SPOILER) denounce classical music. (/SPOILER). However, Alex did not know, and so in choosing, he did not choose, but rather took the path he thought most advantageous. These are indeed hard ethical questions, questions about the very nature of humanity, about the separation of man and beast. It is these questions which allow us to consider the truth about sentience and the monsters of the id. When we grow powerful enough to create using only our minds, we will have to be careful not to let the id have control of that power, because then our primal rage would destroy society.
Fear the monsters from the ID.
