December, Day 2: conversations in retail

Dec 02, 2014 23:59

Two conversations I had today at check out counters:

1, because my name is super unique:

[at take out restaurant:]
Cashier: Your name?
Me: [my name]
Cashier: I just rang up like 18 of you, could you give me another one?

2, your automatic sale item promotions could use work:

[at gas station convenience store]
Me: Just these, please. *hands over box of tampons*
Cashier: Would a karaoke machine help with that?
Me: ...not... no.

Apropos of nothing, a few months ago I started following a few astronauts on twitter, and I really can't recommend it enough. They were all stationed on the International Space Station, and in addition to cute tweets and photos about themselves (from SPACE) they post the most gorgeous photos of Earth in (close to) real time, which is such an unbelievable experience.

Even if you don't follow them, I recommend just browsing through their photostreams, they're just so. damn. pretty *___*. They are:

Sam Cristoforetti

Reid Wiseman

Alexander Gerst

December recs, Day 2:

Grow Up and Out of It by
merisunshine36 (Hockey RPF/Friday Night Lights crossover, Explicit, 18200 words, Explicit, Jonathan Toews/Matt Saracen)

Summary: Matt still thinks that having a hockey player as a model for his life-drawing class was a dumb idea for a PR stunt, but as for what happened after, well--that worked out okay.

(*note: this isn't really part of a series, it's a standalone fic that has another fic-in-the-same-universe connected to it on AO3)

This is such a gorgeous fic, omg I love it so much and have all these desperate feelings when I think about it. You can absolutely come into it from FNL knowing nothing about hockey, and I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it if you're coming in as a fan of Jonathan Toews (although it will require you to take an interest in what goes on in Matt Saracen's head, which, YOU SHOULD ugh Matty boy <3.)

This takes place during Matt Saracen's first year as an art student in Chicago - and Jonny's first year playing hockey in Chicago, before he was famous, before the Blackhawks were any good, when he was roughly eighteen. The fic starts with Jonny modeling in one of Matt's still life classes as a PR stunt, and it's a such a perfect fit to introduce the two canons to each other, and especially fascinating to see Matt and Jonny interact - because Matt's not a pro athlete and he doesn't know what the pressure's like, but he was QB in Dillon, okay, he knows what it's like. And Matt's here, now, out of Dillon, living in the city and all it means trying to be good and trying to make sense of his life.

In one of her comments,
merisunshine said: I kind of think that Matt Saracen is basically the kind of person Tazer would be if he grew up within a community/family with less resources that kept throwing up roadblocks in his way. So it's interesting to throw them at each other and see how they react.

And, YES. I love that idea so much. And this story throws them at each other, and good (and HOT) things happen, and they made me personally have many, many feels. I also really like how these two worlds intertwine here, just - the epilogue of one with the prologue of the other. This whole fic seems... seamless.
