more mobile stuff

Following on from yesterday's mobile phone apps post... I've been testing fring for the past 24 hours, and it seems quite fabulous. It allows me to use pretty much all the features of Skype and GoogleTalk, plus VOIP via Gizmo and other SIP gateways. Even does MSN, but we'll try to ignore that junk for now. So far it's been working great, with an unlimited data plan it keeps me online all the time, and even knows to switch to wi-fi when it's available. Impressive. I've tried a bunch of other stuff like this but they were all flaky. Fring seems to actually work... while hooked up to wi-fi, VOIP calls sounded great with Skype, a little flaky on SIP, but do-able. Switching to the mobile data connection definitely degraded the sound quality, but it still worked. So I've now added my SIP number to my Plaxo card :-)

One good thing about the iPhone is the way Mac developers (who have very little else to do I guess) have been making nice web apps for it. Pity they don't  work on a Nokia... Hang on: they are web apps. That means they should work on anything with a web browser, right? So I browse over to Launcherz and... yep, they work on my Nokia. Heh. The interface has a couple of weirdnesses, but they do work. Nifty. Sudoku4iPhone, we Nokia owners salute you!
