----------------------------------------------

Connor knew he had been found feverish by an ARC team. Knew they told him it had been two months. He didn’t say it seemed like three years.

He kept quiet when asked what had happened to Emily - he thought he remembered her being touched by an anomaly and becoming part of it, but that couldn’t have happened.

Fortunately, the ARC doctors kept everyone from intruding too much upon Connor and the baby. (he said the mother was dead, which was true, as the mother wouldn’t have left)

Connor wished Sarah was here. Wished she was still alive. He knew Sarah would have understood it all and would help him raise the little one.

Knew Sarah knew she ranked second in his heart, and cared anyway. Because the numero uno spot was occupied by a woman who could be problematic at times.

“Why Helen?” Abby asked, standing in the doorway.

Connor looked up from the baby’s face, looked away from the hospital bed he was lying in. Looked at Abby. Like a genius, he asked, “What?”

“Why did you name the baby Helen?” Abby asked.

“Because.”

“Because she’s the mother?”

“Danny said a raptor and a cliff killed Helen,” Connor said.

“Doesn’t mean she couldn’t have been the mother before being killed.”

Connor wondered who had explained time travel to Abby. “Helen Cutter isn’t the mother,” he said.

“Then why name someone after her?” Abby asked again.

“Because none of this would have been possible if it weren’t for her.”

“She was mad.”

“Doesn’t matter.”

“What??”

“Half the things we learned about the anomalies and Creatures,” Connor said, “at least half, we learned because of her.”

“Name one,” Abby said, challenging him.

“If it weren’t for her, we wouldn’t have found out about the dodos until it was too late,” and saw Abby shudder. “She saved Private Lacey on the golf course - though Professor Cutter said Helen saved Claudia Brown in the original timeline.”

“If it weren’t for Helen, Stephen would still be alive!” Abby yelled at him.

“And how many people would have died from Leek’s machinations?” Connor asked quietly, rocking the baby gently so she didn’t wake up and start crying. And without Helen, those giant bats would have claimed a lot more victims…whether they came through the Permian anomaly or another one.

“That’s not the point.”

“Is the point that Stephen would want all those people to live?”

Abby glared at him. “How about the fact that Helen tried to wipe out humanity at the source? Is that enough for you?”

“But she didn’t.” Connor didn’t ask Abby if she regretted being in the Cretaceous with him for an entire year…even now, he was afraid of the answer. “My daughter’s name is Helen, and that’s that.”

“Your daughter?” Abby asked, startled. “Connor, you were back there for two months.”

“She doesn’t have anyone else, Abby,” Connor said. “And I’m going to adopt her. So she’s mine.” Pretty good save, if I do say so myself.

“That doesn’t mean -”

The nurse standing by Connor’s bedside took the baby for her feeding, though didn’t take the baby more than a few feet away. Connor had already made it clear that the baby wasn’t going to leave his sight.

“Love her or hate her,” Connor said. “I’m not excusing what she did, Abby. Just saying the ARC owes her some gratitude at least. We all do.””

Lester came in. “If I might interrupt, I have some news for Mr. Temple.”

Connor noticed that he was with Becker. “Yeah?” Connor asked. “I mean, yes?”

“I’ll excuse this casualness, Connor, on the exceedingly reasonable grounds that you have not been at all well lately. As well as from the disappearance of Lady Emily. What I came here to inform you of,” Lester said, “is that your petition to adopt baby Helen has been approved. Though unless you care to be a single father, you may wish to find a Mrs. or Mr. Temple in short order.”

Sarah would have…even with who the mother is, Connor thought to himself, and was about to agree to be a single dad, when -

“I’ll do it,” Abby said. Person number one to Connor.

“Really now, we don’t want to force you -” Lester said.

“I’ll do it,” Abby said again. “Want to.”

Connor blinked. As did Lester. Baby Helen coughed.

“Right,” Lester said. “Don’t say we twisted your arm. By the power vested in me by the earlier dispensation from the Minister, I now pronounce you man and wife. You may raise the child.”

‘Protect her,’ Emily had asked Connor as she handed him the baby. ‘Keep her safe.’

“Will do,” Connor told them both.
