"Well?"
"Well what?" Colby asked Nikki when he sat down in the early morning at his desk.
"How was the date, is what she's asking," David said.
"Ah."
"And?"
Never again will I complain about all the things they ask me to do, Colby thought to himself. Though climbing a bridge will trigger a whole different set of memories now. "Remember I said we had plans to rappel?"
Both of them nodded.
"We did," Colby said. Much as I love Parker's smile, she took a little too much delight in helping me when I got stuck halfway down.
"So which park did you lovebirds go to?" Nikki asked.
"We didn't."
"She's got a vertical bed?"
"Funny how that's the second place your mind goes to," Colby said.
"Then where?" David asked while Nikki was staring Colby down.
"You know the restaurant they're getting ready to demolish on the edge of Chinatown?"
"Yeah. They had a great duck soup," Nikki said.
"They were open?" David asked Colby.
Colby shook his head. How did I let you talk me into it, Parker? I wasn't drunk or drugged or anything else...yet I let you lead me up to the roof, get in the ropes, and - all the way to the ground.
"Mail for you, sir," said the new mailboy to Colby, handing him a letter.
To David's eyes, the mailboy was looking at Colby with a mix of amazement, awe, and yet was terrified of the man.
Nikki heard the slightly gruff tones of the new guy's voice, and noted how it was kinda like Granger's.
Colby opened the letter, and pulled out a scrap of paper.
No sooner had he read it, than Nikki grabbed it from him, and read it: "'Tomorrow for dinner?'"
