AMITA:

Ever since dinner - more specifically ever since that particular dinner - Charlie’s statement has been echoing in my mind. And while he may have said it to Larry, intending it as just more Guy Talk with one of his closest friends, the underlying meaning still stabbed me in the heart.

And I don’t think Charlie even noticed.

I don’t want to have an argument, so I make sure I slip into Charlie’s office while he’s out, and I write down what’s going through my head.

I write it out, spelling it plain as some people phrase it. Why didn’t you just say you were having second thoughts? is what I write. It is all I write. If that isn’t clear enough to him, then perhaps - maybe - I was mistaken, wrong all this time about how I thought you felt about me, Charlie.

The arrow of time goes in one direction under normal circumstances, barring unusual events like black holes, Big Crunches, and others. But then, if life itself violates laws such as entropy, why should I expect any less from you, Charlie? But the least you could have done was let me know - let me down gently - and in private; not in front of Larry.

We - you and I, Charlie - we tried going a whole day without talking shop, a day without mentioning mathematics. I could probably do it, Charlie; but you couldn’t even manage it with me. And if we get married, you will be seeing me at home, at the University, and even on occasion at the FBI offices when Don calls us in for consultations.

That’s why your words hurt me, Charlie. That's why Maxwell's letting me out.

The end

Author’s note: in my original plan, since Numb3rs is a math show, I was going to have two sequels to this (so as to keep under the 300-word limit)…but while part 2 would’ve been Charlie’s reaction, I couldn’t think of what to have in part 3. so there’s just the one part. No worries.
