This is the way it ends, not with a bang but a wait. A very very long wait.
It’s very puzzling. I was neat, clean, thorough. Nothing omitted and nothing neglected. I attended to each and every detail, no matter how small it would have seemed to any of the nonexistent bystanders. The Code of Harry was upheld. I was careful, damnit.
. . .
Perhaps my sister and Doakes have had more of an effect, more of an impact than I had thought previously.
That’s not something I consider lightly. Because if I do, I have to wonder if I’m starting to slip…if I’m beginning to make mistakes. And I can’t afford mistakes.
I promised Harry that there’d be no mistakes. I made a promise.
And I’m sitting here in a Miami cell awaiting transport to a prison that can house a person of my capabilities, at least long enough for the court to dog and pony through to a conviction. To a death sentence.
I don’t wonder why I don’t have any visitors. I’m a killer, after all, and I always have been. A Morgan by adoption. An employee liked by few, and comfortable for nobody. Who would visit me?
I wouldn’t visit me.
A buzz, and the corridor’s far door opens. My cell door stays shut. “You’ve got a visitor, Morgan.”
She sits down on a hard plastic chair the guard sets down for her in the middle of the hallway, out of reach of my bars - not that I’m inclined to reach through them, but rules are rules. “Hi, Dexter.”
Rita.
