AN: This is what I thought of when I saw that picture of Nick and Selena sitting on a park bench.
Nick watched Selena carefully as she acted out the last scene of the day with David. He admired her acting skills. Once, he had even gone as far as to take notes from her for his own show. However, this Selena wasn’t the poised professional he’d grown to respect.
“Come on Alex, you know that you can’t do that. Dad will completely freak out.” David said to Selena as Justin Russo.
Selena was fading in and out of her character all day, apologizing constantly for the takes she had messed up. “David, I-“
“Cut!” The director stopped the scene because of her slip up. “Why don’t we call it a day, folks? Good job, everyone.” The man said tiredly to his staff.
Selena whispered another ‘sorry’ to David as she swiftly left the set.
Nick started to trail behind her, deeply concerned for his friend, yet unsure of his actions. Maybe confronting her today wasn’t such a good idea. Maybe she just needs her space. He stopped his pursuit, letting her disappear in her dressing room for a moment. He swallowed thickly.
“S-Selena?” Nick knocked on her door. He was answered with a long silence and suddenly leaving her alone didn't seem so bad. His heart lifted as she opened the door, but sank right back down as he took in her appearance. The usual, bright eyed, graceful girl he’d grown protective over was nowhere to be found. She smiled lightly at him like the action alone pained her. He tries to remember her genuine smile. “Come on. We’re going for a walk.” He ushered her out of the stuffy room before she could protest.
xxxxxxxxxx
“Are you okay?” It's a stupid question. He blurts it out over the awkward silence they fell into. Of course she’s not.
“Yeah, fine.” Selena replied, swirling around the ice cream in her cup as they walked through the park. She's never liked to talk about her own feelings. He wants more than anything to understand her guarded mind.
Nick cursed his idea to get the frozen treat as he brought his pea coat tighter around his small frame. Back to silence.
“It’s Demi again, isn’t it?” He says quietly.
Selena feels defense bubble inside her at his words. They made her feel stupid. Like she was part of a silly teen drama. But it was much more than that. So much more. Of course it was Demi. Everything was about her.
“Yeah.” She spat. “But I don’t want to talk about it.” She tried to swallow her emotions. It's not his fault. Nick senses her animosity.
“I-I mean.” He stopped to face her with apologetic eyes. Searching. “I’m sorry. I just… Sel.” He pleaded weakly with her, a helpless teenage boy first and foremost.
Selena sighed, giving him a reassuring smile. “Sorry. It just makes me feel like I’m being a drama queen when I try to talk about it. I feel like, everyone just sees another broken friendship that I’m overreacting to. Like it should be easy to get over.” Selena’s always been a few steps ahead of everyone in maturity. She's different. Wiser.
As much as it pained her to think about, she knew there was no one else that would mean as much as Demi did. It was still a concept far too tragic for her to handle as who she truthfully is. A small girl.
“You know how much I respect you, Sel.” Nick motioned to a park bench facing away from the slowly setting sun. “I want to help you in any way possible. Please let me be here for you.”
Selena sat down and crossed her arms, shivering slightly. Nick resisted the urge to put an arm around her. He relaxed his posture to match hers. “I didn’t just love her, Nick.” She eyed the lingering paparazzi, thinking for a moment. “I worshiped her.” She smiled to herself. Really smiled.
Nick swallows past the effects of her contagious taste of happiness. Anything he has to say feels significantly less poetic. She’s beautiful through and through. Far too perfect for him, and he knows it.
“It’s pathetic, really.” She looked out into the distance. Nick kept his eyes trained on her. “Something like that… You can’t get over it. God knows I’ve tried.” She laughs at the idea lightly, and smiles gently in his direction. She was never mad at him.
He understands now. Any sort of bitterness she feels isn’t towards Demi. Or anyone else. It never was. It’s about her own emotions. He thinks she’s the strongest person he’s ever known. She dwells on her actions, mentally critiquing herself and no one else for who knows how many late nights.
And all he could offer was a sad look of admiration. She doesn’t need his feeble words of sympathy.
“At my lowest, sometimes I think, what’s the point of life without love?” She pauses, keeping Nick on edge. “But, I have it, you know? I still love her. I can’t help it.” She focuses on the distance, her expression suddenly changes to pain and she looks down again. “It’s like she was made for me, but I wasn’t made for her.” She pauses for a moment then stands, offering Nick a hand. “We should leave.”
“Wait…” He doesn’t know what to say.
She swallows anxiously. “Please.”
He looks at her sadly, reluctantly accepting her warm grasp. “All hope’s not lost...” Nick offers all he has, trying to find a settling conclusion to their conversation he wants so desperately not to be over.
Her eyes focus on something past him for a fraction of a second as she begins to pull him along. He notices, following her quick gaze and instantly feels the heat rise in his cheeks.
Demi.
But not just Demi. How dare Joe take her out here of all places? He’ll ask later at home with clenched fists and a strong, accusing glare. He watches in disgust as they link hands, and feels his jaw set.
Selena’s small hands bring him back to reality. The fire disappears from his eyes. She’s smiling again. It’s tired but genuine. “It’s okay.” She's okay.
He breaks entirely. This is all wrong. No one should ever be this brave or forgiving. She wanted to save him the heartache. His lungs fight against him now as he realizes why she's guiding him away. Why she never wanted to let him in or explain herself. She was trying to save him from her tragedy. Because that's what it is. And he can't handle it like a man.
But she's okay.
She’s definitely an angel.
