“Are you sure that’s enough?” Nick was hovering over Demi’s shoulder.

She squinted her eyes in focus as she tried to read the measurement on the beaker. “It’s kind of hard to do anything with your fro absorbing all the oxygen around me.” Demi sighed.

“That doesn’t even make sense.” Nick grumbled, straightening up and running a hand through hair.

“Alright students, you guys need to wrap it up before the bell rings.” The teacher announced to the chemistry class. “If you need to stay late to finish up, feel free to do so.”

“Why are we always the last ones to finish?” Nick noticed how everyone else was already cleaning up their stations.

“Cause you spend half of your time daydreaming, and I spend all of my time cleaning up your messes.” Demi explained.

Nick opened his mouth to counter the accusation, but thought better of it. “But, if I’m so bad, why do you always partner up with me?” He defended.

“Because no one else is willing to risk their lives around you.”

“Oh, don’t be so dramatic.”

“I think fear of you accidentally setting someone on fire AGAIN, is hardly being dramatic. Your turn.” Demi pushed the beaker towards him as the bell rang.

“That could have happened to anyone! Plus, David’s hair has completely grown back now. We’re totally on good terms again.” Nick tried to high five a boy as he passed by. “Right, man?”

“Shut up.” David brushed past him.
Demi failed to hold in her laughter.

“Okay, whatever. What’s next?” Nick focused back on the assignment.

“Just mix those two beakers together. At least there’s no way you can make this dangerous.” Demi smiled as she washed her hands in their table’s sink.

“Ha-ha-ha” Nick responded sarcastically. He straightened his lab apron and rubbed his hands together in anticipation before grabbing a jar. Demi took a subtle, cautionary step away.

She took off her goggles and rubbed her tired eyes. She had yet to rid herself of her morning drowsiness and the day was almost over.

“You okay?”

“What?”

“What's going on, Lovato?” Nick looked up at her through his brown curls as he leaned over to grab a glass container. “You’ve been pretty out of it the past couple of days. Anything on your mind?”

“Yeah, no I’m fine.” She tried to look reassuring.

“If you say so.” He didn’t seem convinced as he went back to work on their project.

She thought she was holding it together much better than that.

“I’m gay.”

“What?!” Nick snapped his attention back to her, dropping a beaker into the jar of water, causing some of the contents to splash up into his face. “Oh my gosh!” Nick started panicking. “IT GOT ON MY FACE!”

“Nick, calm down!” Demi tried to still his frantic movements. Ms. Fey got up from her desk, noticing the commotion.

“I need an acid wash station or something!” He yelled, flailing his hands.
Demi grabbed a paper towel and tried to wipe off his face for him.

"Would you be still?"

“No, don’t touch me! You’ll get it on you too!” Nick shielded her efforts in a karate-like stance.

“What happened?” Ms. Fey asked Demi.

“He got some of the experiment on him.” Demi huffed.

“OH GOD!” Ms. Fey yelled in his face.

“WHAT?!”

“Your face!!”

“What? What’s happening?!”

“IT’S MELTING!”

“Why are you laughing?!” He directed towards Demi.

“Because you’re fine.” Ms. Fey said flatly. Nick looked betrayed. “Did you even read what the assignment was about? Do you know what sodium bicarbonate is?” She sighed.

“Baking soda.” Demi interjected, wiping his face for him.

“Oh… right.” He cleared his throat, trying to preserve what was left of his dignity.

"Why don’t you guys just clean up and call it a day.” Ms. Fey laughed as she walked back to her desk.

Nick waited until Ms. Fey was settled before he spoke. “So… did I hear what I think I heard?” Nick whispered as they mopped up the mess.
Demi nodded slowly, keeping her eyes on the desk.
Nick stopped and observed her for a moment.
“Have you… always known? Or did something life altering happen in between algebra and lunch that I should try to avoid?” Nick questioned.

Demi smirked. “No. I mean I’ve always know. I just haven’t told anyone.”

“Oh.” Nick’s expression changed to flattery. “So I’m the first person to know this?”

“First and only.”

“Cool.” He smiled, throwing some trash away.

She took on his previous look of wonder. “That’s it?”

“Yeah, I mean. What do you want me to say?” Nick responded.

“I don’t know.” Demi looked perplexed. “I didn’t expect it to go this smoothly.”

“Demi, you're my best friend. This just means I can talk to you about girls now." Demi rolled her eyes. "Besides, I can’t say it went all that smoothly.” Nick said as he brushed some broken glass into the trashcan. “I could react worse if you want?” He contorted his face, trying to find a look of disgust.

"No, it's okay." She laughed lightly.

“So when you dated that Jeff guy-“

“Fake.” Demi interjected as they walked home.

“And Kyle?”

“Totally fake.”

“No way! You were so into him!” Nick said, astonished.

“You learn to be a good actor in these situations.” Demi shrugged. “I had to date someone to keep people from wondering if I was some sort of heartless stone person.”

Nick nodded in understanding. He suddenly stopped walking, causing Demi to almost trip.

“What’s wrong?” She asked.

He wore a look of pained realization. “You’ve been pretending to be happy this whole time?” It was a statement. "Dem-"

Demi shrugged. “It’s not like I go home and cry myself to sleep every night.” Not a total lie. She hasn’t slept in so long.

“Dem, I’m serious.” He walked her to her doorstep. “If you need to talk, you know to call me whenever.” Demi nodded. “Have you thought about telling anyone else?”

“I don’t know. I’ve been wanting to tell Dallas. I think she’d take it better than the rest of the family.” A bitter taste lingered on her tongue at the thought of how her family might react. "I just can't keep lying."
Nick unexpectedly pulled her into a strong hug. “Just call me or something. I'm always here.” He said into her hair. The weight of her secret finally settling down on him.

Suddenly the front door opened revealing Dallas carrying a trash bag.
“Oh!” She said startled, taking in their intimate position. “It’s about time! I thought you guys would never admit your love for each other!” She winked at them before proceeding to the garbage can.

Nick let go of Demi swiftly and put a foot of space between them. “Iro-o-ony.” He quietly sung out. Demi elbowed him in the side as they both awkwardly waited for Dallas to retreat back into the house.

“You guys are too cute!” Dallas skipped past them, ruffling Demi’s hair on the way.

“Aw man.” Nick huffed. Demi looked at him curiously. “She’s gonna think I turned you gay.”

“Shut up.” She laughed, punching his arm. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Alright, but keep me posted.” He said as she pushed him to the sidewalk.
