Summary: In Dacia, Rome built a wall to keep the barbarians out. C. 259 AD, the native populations rebelled, and kicked the colonizers out. Jensen is a Roman soldier, Jeff is a barbarian shepherd. They have nothing in common.
Reccer's notes: You should click this link if you'd like to read a lovingly fleshed out AU set on the borders of the Roman empire. Jeff and Jensen slowly move from enemies to becoming friends and equals via a captor/captive situation that wasn't exactly planned. The domestic h/c parts are delicious. There is humour, there is political intrigue, there are battle scenes, and the historical context reverberates throughout the fic.
[Short excerpt]"Are you going to punish me?" Jensen asks, in the low, teasing voice he used to use while on patrol. It's the voice that had turned Jeff's head, so many months ago.
"I should," Jeff says, and gets up, pausing to let his knees crack. He's not as young as he once was. "But it's unrealistic to think I can keep you on a leash all the time, especially when I have to go out. So I'm going to unshackle you."
A light shines in Jensen's eyes as he takes that in.
"And I fully expect you to try escaping, even though I've already explained the terrain to you. So you're not getting your sandals back. If you make a break for it, you're doing it barefoot."
Jensen lets loose a string of obscenities, the gist of which Jeff gets, even if some of the words are foreign. But he holds still as Jeff unlocks the shackle around his wrist, and once Jeff's done, he chafes that wrist with the opposite hand, looks Jeff in the eye, and runs out the door.
