Most people seem to hate this holiday passionately. I have no idea why. Some shit about commercialism and generally being fun h8rs.
However, it's my second-favorite holiday after Christmas, and I love it. I wear all red if I can and I give out candy to people I meet and I'm happy! It's so nice. <3 So, HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY, even if you're embittered and don't want to acknowledge it. I hope for you to find love and happiness and tons of 50% off candy at Walgreens on Thursday. I will be everybody's valentime. =D I do miss the days of making 'mailboxes' and taking them to school and getting all kinds of goofy stuff from the kids in your class. Maybe I'll photograph or scan the best school valentine I ever received - it's pretty great (and nothing to do with romance at all).
Last night (Monday/Tuesday night, for clarification purposes, as I'm writing this missive at nearly 5 AM), it snowed. A great deal. Well, much less than, say, New York state got. But a significant amount. It was also The Cold when I woke up, and I ran downstairs to see if school was cancelled, but UNO was like THE ONLY SCHOOL IN THE CITY STILL OPEN. Dad volunteered to take me, having tried to get out to work but finding too many accidents on the road for comfort so he returned home for the day, and we set out. We saw about 4 pwn3d cars and had to detour to avoid another mess, and almost hit/were hit by a car that stalled in the middle of the road just as we got to the campus. But we made it, and I had a few minutes to spare, and when I walked into class (Music of the People: Rock & Pop), the auditorium was shockingly 80% full! I couldn't believe that everyone had made it. Dr. Roland decided, however, that since 50 people were absent, that we'd omit the listening portion of today's exam on early rock'n'roll, and we just took the written exam. I think I missed 5 questions out of 30, tops, so that's good. I was dead wrong - I failed it. 100/150=67%. :( And I found out we don't have class Thursday, so that gives me a chance to sleep in a few hours. I'm going to need it, since I'm going to be up late bullshitting another Middlemarch journal - the whole thing is due Thursday and then we're DONE WITH THE STUPID BOOK.
Dad went to Borders since my class was really short and then he went to the other Borders with me to get Dessy's valentime's day present. I got 2 of those Thingy-A-Day calendars for Smeg for $1 each - one with watercolor lessons and one with cross-stitch patterns, along with another book about 1453 (just that one year - it's some new thing, I guess), and I got Dessy something she really wanted :D and I asked Dad if he would be my Valentine, waving the first season set of House M.D. in the air. It was $20 on sale instead of $60 and he said, "Sure." W00T W00T W00T HOUSE OMGZ I DON'T KNOW WHEN I'LL FIND TIME TO WATCH IT BUT AT LEAST I HAVE IT OMG HAPPY V-DAY TO ME.
House was on tonight, too, and it was ... odd. But not really awful. It was more interesting than the one from 2 weeks ago! Sadly, I have to wait THREE WHOLE WEEKS for the next episode. :(! Why do they keep doing this? I only watch like 3 shows on a remotely regular basis, TV. Don't be hatin'.
Wilson Quote: "Do I have to be your conscience? I don't WANT to be your conscience. I'm TIRED of being your conscience!" <333 Wilson.
What else can I go on about? I've been sleeping, trying to get over being sick, critiquing my classmates' poems... Yesterday I came home from poetry and tossed all my furniture around and cleaned the hell out of my room, as best I could. It's much neater now, though I still have some stuff to properly put away. I'm kind of waiting for my new dresser to arrive so I can sort through that stuff and get it all rearranged.
Friday night, Smeg and I picked up Dessy and we went to Crossroads Mall (which is the deadest still-alive mall in existence - the food court had THREE of approximately 10 kiosks still open and they weren't doing that much business) for dinner, then stopped at the attached Target for nothing in particular, and then we finally meandered over to UNO's student center to do the thing we meant to do: attend a Battle of the Bands concert because Dessy's friend was in a band that was playing.
The BotB thing started at 6pm and we got there around 8:20pm. We heard the noise and walked upstairs to one of the ____ Rooms and peeked inside. There was a low stage with a band of boys playing discordant noise and there were several plastic chairs spaced evenly apart several feet from the stage. Approximately 20 people were occupying the chairs and approximately 0 were having any fun at all. Also, we were under the impression the gig was free, but two angry-looking women were running a ticket table (despite the fact we could stand outside the doorway and see/hear everything fine, if we didn't mind looking at the side of the stage) and it was $5/person. We decided to screw that crap, because dude, a joyless loud concert of bands we don't know/may not like for $5? And we'd missed the first 2 hours anyway. UNO has no clue how to have fun.
We went downstairs so Dessy could leave Hannah a note at the coffee stand, and just as we got there, we ran into Dessy's old friend Jerrid, and proceeded to spend the next 3 hours talking in the deserted student center. He worked at the computer lab, which is open until midnight (I had no idea), and we were still there after the rest of the building shut down and the gates were closed. It was weird and kind of eerie. Then we stood outside in the 8*F night and talked some more, but we had to stop because it was FUCKING COLD LIKE A THING THAT IS COLD. I would've gladly talked more if I wasn't in danger of getting frostbite! Alas.
So it was a fun evening despite the fact we didn't do anything we'd meant to do.
Smeg and I are still playing Zelda - we got to fighting Ganon last night, but we didn't plan it well and died about 60% through. Woe. Then tonight we left the castle and dicked around, and tried to fight this stupid desert Cave Of Unending Misery (it has some other name but I forget what it is - it's pretty negative, though) and we lost for like the 3rd time because they DON'T LET YOU REPLENISH HEARTS. It's so lame!! You even meet fairies every 15 rooms or so, and yet they give you no replenishment of life whatsoever. So we packed all 3 bottles with blue potion and used up all our Rupees by employing the Magic Armor (which uses money instead of hearts when you get damaged - runs out really fast, though, and then it's like wearing a block of iron), but we still couldn't get through all of it. I just sounded like the biggest geek in Nerdville, but anyone who's played it knows what I mean. STOOPID KAVE. Maybe when the Scones come this summer, we can battle it.
I should stop this entry if only because it's obscenely long.
HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY, EVERYBODY. Stop complaining! <3 <3 <3
