Which is basically how it usually goes, I guess, but this broadcast felt more clear in terms of which eight meaningless awards were given out. Even if it was completely calculated -- and I agree it was just part of a Britney PR move, especially when I found myself reading beforehand some false-supsense BS about whether she would win, because she apparently never won one of those before, trying to play it up as some kind of Susan Lucci thing when in fact (a.) she's not even 30 and (b.) no one in the audience could tell you that she'd never "won" one of those things before, at least not without a lot of prompting from MTV.
The fact that Britney returned to "open the show" and accept a ton of meaningless awards, yet hardly anyone made (so far as I could tell; there was lots of fast-forwarding) more than a slight, passing reference to the drubbing she got last year, was so perfectly MTV: huge, winking hype to something controversial, with an absolutely toothless follow-through.
