Turn the volume down

On this, the box-office low tide mark of the past four years, I managed to go to five movies. Friday was a future Semi-Incongruous Double Feature with default earnings champion Bangkok Dangerous followed by Traitor. I'll go into greater detail later in the week via L blog, but I have to say, I prefer the far less reputable Bangkok, not just ( Read more... )

Me and the Fee were watching the VMAs, too, last night. Did anyone notice what was going on on VH1 during the broadcast? For the whole two hours (we assume, not like we watched it all), VH1 showed the following text: "Why aren't you watching the VMAs on MTV? Love, VH1." Then there were little ads in the corners and every once in a while the top corner would peel back and show what was going on on MTV, live. Katie discovered how to use our PIP, so we proved it was the actual live broadcast in those corners. Creative programming, no? Odd, by creative.

We, too, watched the VMAs (who knew that people our age still did this? Heh). I liked Russell Brand, he was coherent and just dismissive enough of the proceedings. I didn't know 90% of the "music" though.

I thought it was pretty clear that the Britney Spears awards were orchestrated as part of her "redemptive" "appearance." It's funny, I thought these had grown into one of those rare awards shows where you *couldn't* tell who won beforehand just by picking out the second-tier nominee that they were able to get to attend, but ... pretty much.

The awards felt a little more clear, at least, than last year, where it felt like they were just randomly handing stuff to the MTV personalities freshest in the producers' minds in the middle of a screaming echo chamber with live feeds to other screaming echo chambers ( ... )

Oh, and I don't have huge problems with Pink, but listening to that song for the first time, I couldn't help but think of this L Mag feature wherein their music critic brings up the weirdness of a nigh-thirtysomething pop star professing her desire to get into a fight. To that I would add: Pink is incredibly rich and has been for years. Who exactly is bringing her down?

No! Or at least it wasn't immediately apparent to me who you meant. Did you mean the father who tried to give the doctor a tip early in the movie?

I've been away from Western media for a month and a half, so I don't know anything about what went on at the VMAs, but Tokio Hotel was on my CD Game mix two years ago, if you were on that. I knew about them before the American tweeners did! And yes, they are Hot Topic: Deutschland edition.
