My summer, as it happened, in all it's gory detail :)

Jun 01, 1998 22:12

This was my webpage at the time it occurred. I decided to post it in my past for posterity. I don't know why. I'm an idiot.

Well, for the first 2 months of school, my main homepage spoke of my summer, as it was "currently going." What it was, basically, was a list of my plans for the summer, since it was last updated 2 weeks into it! However, I have finally done something about the main page, and I will, someday, finish the full story of the roadtrip, my time at camp, and various and sundry things. It makes for a cute story... Enjoy!

Last Update: 5/26/98 7:39:36 PM, EST

Well, the end of the semester has come and gone, and I am now in the middle (actually, closer to the end...) of the earlier mentioned roadtrip. I was going to keep this page updated as I went through the trip, but my plans suffered a major change when my 6 month old laptop DIED on the first day. I can't say I'm very impressed with the company, HyperData, but that's just me.

  • Road Trip So Far:

    • I left springfield at about 9:30 or so on Sunday night (May 17th?), then picked up my passenger in Peoria and spent the night at the fraternity. That morning, we headed for New York, stopping first at a station to get my a/c, transmission, and radiator flushed. About half an hour after we left there, I was forced to pull an illegal U-turn on I-74 because I had left my (now broken) laptop at behind a soda machine to charge up while they fixed my car. I kinda forgot to get it before we left. BUT, once that was taken care of, we hit the road for King's Hills, New York (somewhere on Long Island). 16 hours later (about 4 am Tuesday morn), I passed out on the guest bed at my passenger's house.

    • When I finally woke up at around noon Tuesday, I called up my friend Alison in Merrick, about 30 mins from Eric's house. I told her I'd be there in an hour, booted up my (then working) laptop and punched in her address to get directions. After I got those, I hopped into the shower and shaved and all that crap (there's a reason I'm going into so much detail) When I stepped out of the shower, the computer was frozen. When I rebooted, it was dead. So much for my maps, which were all stored on the computer and had yet to be printed out, along with all the addresses and phone numbers of the people/places I intended to go visit! I managed to make it to Alison's house by 2, then spent a few hours with her and her fr5iends, then went to sleep like a good little boy.

    • The next morning, Alison, her mother, and I all caught a train to the City (that's NY city for you non-city-folk) and saw a show called Art on Broadway (Alan Alda plays in a 3 character show about a guy who cannot accept the fact that his best friend bought a 4 foot by 5 foot painting with a white background and white stripes for 200,000 pounds). It was a good show, made me laugh and all. I liked it, and it was only 90 minutes. After the show, we all went back to Allison's house and I got to meet some of the people she's told me about over the past 3 years, then we watched tv and went back to sleep (exciting, isn't it?)

    • Thursday afternoon, I drove down to Baltimore to see my Aunt, Uncle, and Cousins. I spent Thursday and Friday I spent with them schmoozing about, then went to Washington DC (with them) for the Bar Mitzvah of David Wyman (one of my distant cousins). I must say that the reception for David's Bar Mitzvah was the most fun I ever had at any Bar Mitzvah or any family function. Of course, waiting at the airport by myself for 3 hours for my fathers delayed flight only to find that he missed it, but my brother and sister were on it (I didn't even know they were coming!) on Friday night wasn't so fun. But Saturday was magnifique! Sunday morning was calm and quiet at the hotel, then a return trip (after dropping dad and siblings at airport) to Baltimore. More misfortune awaits!

    • So on Monday morning, after an uneventful drive from Washington, my car should be fine, right? WRONG. I was pulling out of my Uncle's driveway when I found that my right rear tire was dead flat (kinda ironic, since I had expressed concern the past two days over the status of my front tires...), and my right front was taco'd (bulging out on the side for some reason). That pushed my schedule back about an hour, and my budget by about $200. I did eventually, after a couple hours, tolls, traffic jams on the Jersey Turnpike, and 20 minutes driving through a zero-visibility flash flood, make it to my friend Danielle's (aka Yellie) house. I spent the night there, and she woke me up at 8am to finish giving me directions to my next stop before she jumped on an airplane and headed back to Texas for summer school. I went back to bed until about 11 when a multi-legged insect climbed on my leg and sprung me from bed. I collected my things, thanked my hostess, and got in the car. That brings me to Tuesday afternoon...

    • Tuesday, I hung out at the home of my best friend, Dave in Newtown, CT while he was at work. To help kill time, I called a couple friends to find out what was going on with my fraternity brothers, high school buddies, and my friends from back home (mental note, call Lemily to see how her surgery went). Then I sat my ass down and revised my web page to reflect the past couple days' events. In case you hadn't guessed yet, you've now caught up with me. :) At this point, I think I'll be going. Dave's girlfiend, Kris (or is it Chris?), is gonna keep me company tonight until Dave gets back. Below is the est of my roadtrip plan... BTW, tomorrow's my birthday. Uh oh!

  • Road Trip Upcoming:

    • Well, you don't care about the stuff I planned to have done and didn't get around to! But coming up...
    • Dave and I shall celebrate my birthday...
    • Finally, I'll be heading up to Millbrook, NY to see a bunch of friends from high school.

I might go back Thursday and spend the night a Kiko's place so I won't have to drive down twice, and I want to be there both days.
    • Then I'll hop in the car and shimmy my ass back home. Hopefully in time for the Dave Mathews Band in St. Louis Whoops, sold out :(

  • I have to be at camp at SIU-Carbondale by sometime in early June, I'll be there for about a month with my buddies.
  • The day after I come back from camp, i start summer school at SCI until 2 weeks before bradley starts up.
  • Between classes at SCI (classes are Tue & Thu), I'll be doing the wiring at Theta Xi. Bob Schmanski has set up a page detailing the (dead link) plans, our proposed timeline, and how things are actually coming.
