Valentine's Day sure has changed since I was in high school...

Okay, so I meant to write this yesterday, but didn't have time...

I work at a high school (for one of my jobs, anyway) and yesterday was pretty damn amusing. Watching all of the Freshmen & Sophomores cruise in to school with enormous boxes of red and pink...candies, cards, flowers, you name it. Bundles and bundles of mylar ballons. It took an extra 10 minutes just to take roll because everyone was talking about who they had gifts for, who got gifts that they weren't expecting, and why didn't they get a gift for someone 'cause they've liked them since last semester---chicken! Marilyn even got a box of chocolates and a mylar baloon from Matt---ohmigod! Matt?!? Who knew! Christ, Charlene came in with more roses than I think I've ever received in my whole LIFE, and that's twenty-six years on Sunday, thank-you-very-much! Then of course you had your singing valentines that were due to arrive by homeroom and the 20 million valentine grams that Key Club, Swim Team, and Dance Squad were selling & delivering. Kids were coming in with heart socks, red and pink clothes & all kinds of other V-Day apparel. My personal favorites were the three girls who came in with matching airbrushed T-shirts with their names AND the name of their sweeties they all got on their triple-date at Magic Mountain. Even Vanessa and Adele were holding hands and exchanging special valentines, and Jacob was spazzing out 'cause he couldn't remember if he put his name on the Valentine gram he sent Jamal or not.

How times have changed. I don't even recall seeing this much gift giving & holiday cheer before Winter Break. It was really cute to just observe all of the action. And jeez...I was even sorta impressed.

So then I went home and got some things together and hung out with my two favorite boys yesterday. Not a romantic thing by any stretch of the imagination, but a fun fun day. Rented Wet Hot American Summer (great fucking movie!) and watched more teeny-boppers gratitously make out on their last day of Camp Firewood in 1981. Hell yeah.

I think the most annoying part of Valentine's Day is to hear all of the people who complain about it. All of the people who say it's just a commercial holiday, just a reason for people to spend money at the Hallmark store, bah blah blah. Yeah, whatever. We know, we know...you're supposed to love the one you're with all 365 days of the year, not just one day. How profound. That whole attitude is sooo 90's. Think of another reason, I'm bored with that one already. Don't get me wrong, I've spent many a Valentine's Day marking calendars with an "X" on the 14th with a gigantic black magic marker. I've lamented over my singledom, and even celebrated it with other single friends. Who cares. If you're into it---great. If you're not, just shut the fuck up. I just rather enjoy a day where you get to witness people loving each other, and when it actually outnumbers all the people giving the bird on the freeway in rush hour traffic.

Today I went to Rite Aid and bought some heart candy at 50% off.
I didn't need a Valentine to do that, now did I?
