Today marks the 50th aniversary of spaceflight. Back in 1957, the USSR launched Sputnik. Remember it? No, me neither, but it's still cool.
So if you're in or around London and looking for something to do this evening, why not pop along to the Royal Aeronautical Society at 4 Hamilton Place where they will be having a little celebration. Those of you who were at uni with me might even recognise the names below...
The Space Group of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) are pleased to announce the following special event:
Thursday 04 October 2007 at RAeS, London ** "Sputnik - Fifty years in Space". Special celebratory evening lecture programme. Refreshments 17:30, start 18:00.
Join the UK space community at Hamilton Place as we celebrate Fifty Years in Space at a special evening session featuring two unique lectures:
"Sputnik - a historical reflection" by Dr Chris Welch, Principal Lecturer, Kingston University.
"Virgin Galactic - let the journey begin.." by Dr Julia Tizard, Operations Manager, Virgin Galactic.
Dr Chris Welch will begin our evening by presenting a wide ranging review of the past fifty years, and setting that first tentative step in 1957 into the wider historical perspective.
Our evening then continues as Dr Julia Tizard provides us with an overview and update on the whole Virgin Galactic programme, before specifically concentrating on the preparation of their passengers for spaceflight.
2008 will be "The Year of the SpaceShip" as Virgin Galactic plans to unveil WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo and to herald the start of test flights.
