Sloan
Kool Haus

SLOAN! amazzzzzing! the snazziest show I've been to in a while!
I guess the first thing I should mention is the weather. it's been pissing rain for like 3 days now. I've had enough.
I had classes today, intro to int'l relations..that ended at 4 and the doors to the show were at 8. so I braved the revolving doors at robarts and studied for like 3 hours (I decided I wasn't gonna wait in the rain and since I was going by myself I thought I'd just stand in the back). then hopped on a bus and got to the kool haus around 7:50. to my great surprise there was only like 50 people ahead of me! waited for like 5 minutes, got inside and I hit up the merch counter first thing and bought a shirt and sloan dvd then went inside and there was barely anyone there. I wound up getting front row, right up against the barricade!! pretty much the coolest thing ever.
while waiting for the opening band to come on, this guy handed out flyers of a sloan cartoon he made..it's pretty hilarious
then opening band (the yoko casionos) came on..they were ok, the drummer and the bassist kinda looked like they were trying to be emo, I dunno. the guitarist however, he looked like harper the mormon from saved! they're from vancouver, they played like 7 songs or something
then there was a reeeeally long break..it took like 45 minutes to set up and get the guys on stage. while waiting, patrick (and his pregnant wife?) were sidestage, so I snapped a shot
the wait was definitely worth it though. they were incredible. sloan shows are always so high energy and so much fun, the crowds are always really good (no shoving, people are polite, it's nice). they played a really great set, awesome mix of the new stuff and a lot of old tunes (but no coax me :( that's my all time favourite sloan track). here's the set list:
*set list photo courtesy of
beth @ rockpaperpixels.com total: 28 songs. that's right. it killed. every song they did sounded soooo good.
like 3/4 through patrick dropped his pick on the ground, but cos the barricade was in front of me I could get it. so I asked one of the photographers to get it for me and at first she was like "no." then before the came back on for an encore she went and got it for me. yayyy!
I took tonnnns of photos, so here are a few:
and I got some videos too!
I understand(in this one, right around 1:45 chris looks at me and notices I have my camera up and he says "are you filming?" [I nod] "right now?" [I nod again] "a movie?!" [smile/nod] then he's like 'lol I dunno' and he goes and hides behind patrick. good times!)
you know what it's aboutthis one's linked with I understand, but youtube doesn't like files over 100MB so I had to splice them :(
ill placed trust money city maniacs who taught you to live like that? if it feels good do it(mid way through the night someone started a "jaaay-aayyyy" chant and then mid way through this song chris was like "slowww-owwwn" crowd repeats then the did "jaaay-ayyy" and was like "I dunno who came up with that jay jam")
so many things got thrown on stage lol..first it was this blow up smiley face thing with arms and legs..then a nova scotia pin (to which chris said "a nova scotia pin! that's where we're from..yeah, thanks to whoever whipped this piece of metal at me lol"), then someone threw a whole belt up and it stuck on the neck of chris' bass till he got a play break when he tried to put it on but it was too small and he laughed and shrugged and kept on playing. such good times! they're so hilarious.
chris mentioned "I was reading like now magazine or whatever and they said 'are you tired of seeing chris murphy at the clubs in toronto?' I do go out a lot, but I'm always in bed by 10" lol I love that man.
then for the encore, they got half of the yoko's up on stage with them, the drummer and singer, and they did a couple songs together (I can feel it and the rest of my life).
concert ended and I took a cab to union station and subwayed home..til the shiTTC struck again. on the sheppard line there were "signal problems" so I had to wait half an hour for a shuttle bus outside in the rainy cold. I got home at like 1:40.
shiTTC or not, I had a really super night.
