100 Historical Things, Number 29
Apologies for leaving it so long to post the answers to the
Historical Dates Quiz I had previously posted! Here they are...
In what year was the legendary founding of Rome?
> Traditionally it is 753 BC (though they took a while to settle on it, and there's no reason to think that it is literally true!). Kudos to
xwingace for sidestepping brilliantly with the answer of '0 Ab Urbe Condita' :)
In what year did Alexander the Great die?
> 323 BC (in Babylon). He was only 32.
In what year was the slave revolt of Spartacus?
> 73 BC is the date usually given as the time of the uprising. However, it took time to put it down. The revolt, also known as
the Third Servile War, really lasted from 73 to 71.
In what year was Pompeii destroyed when Vesuvius erupted?
> 79 AD. We have a wonderful first-hand account by
Pliny the Younger - and his uncle,
Pliny the Elder (by far the more fun to read IMO!), died in the disaster.
In what year did Alfred the Great die?
> 899 AD. But
we don't actually know what he died of.
In what year did Canute become king of England?
> 1016. (Notice that I have stopped putting AD only since we got into four figures!) He's an interesting one, and involved in a
conquest of England that is not really terribly well known, I think.
In what year did Macbeth become king of Scotland?
> 1040. As a historical character, I think he's actually more interesting that the Shakespeare character :) And he has a bit of
an overlap with the aforementioned Canute.
In what year was the Battle of Stamford Bridge?
> 1066. It wasn't only the Normans who were causing trouble in 1066, you see!
In what year did King John sign the Magna Carta?
> 1215. This is one of the most memorable of the dates included, I think.
In what year was the Battle of Crecy?
> 1346, and
the beginning of the end of classic chivalry.
In what year was the Battle of Agincourt?
> 1415. Another well known one, and another one made popular by Shakespeare.
In what year did Edward IV die?
> 1483, causing some problems with
his successors.
In what year did Richard III die?
> 1485. Shakespeare at it again!
In what year did Christopher Columbus discover the Americas?
> 1492, with a rhyme and everything :)
In what year was the Battle of Flodden Field?
> 1513. The battlefield is rather lovely today, and if you're wondering what on earth was going on that needed fighting over at that time,
the Scots started it :)
