Historical Onomastics Again

100 Historical Things, Number 28

So, I mentioned that I'm into onomastics, didn't I? Onomastics being the study of names from various different angles. Well, I also just found an interesting article on dog names in ancient Greece.

Being overworked I'm going to have to stop there rather than discussing ancient animal names in more detail - but rest assured that this is an interesting topic :) We even have a record from c.1400 BC, in the Mycenaean Linear B tablets, that the Mycenaeans were giving names to their oxen. I failed at finding a nice accessible link for this, but if you're interested and prepared to be hardcore then have a look at my friend Jose Luis Garcia Ramon's kindly uploaded PDF of his chapter from a book, on p230 of which he talks about the ox names :)

Now, how about an interactive exercise? Tell me, what language is your name derived from? You don't have to say what your name is unless you want to. (My own real first name is Greek.)
