Museum funding cuts in Liverpool

Aug 19, 2010 13:30

I had an email on a Classics list today about funding cuts to the National Museums Liverpool. As a child of the north-west Merseyside area, I have many fond memories of the Liverpool museums, which include a fantastic central museum (v good collection of mummies and sculpture, and many many many other things), a maritime museum in the Albert Dock (v good displays on the slave trade as well as merchant shipping and naval warfare), and a heritage museum (Beatles and all that!), as well as a conservation centre (displays on treatment of antiques and antiquities, as well as books, etc.) that I found inspirational when I was growing up. My Mum used to take me to these places when I was young, and without all that access to historical information and amazing artefacts, I honestly don't think I'd be the person I am today. The rich access to all kinds of cultural heritage is one of the many reasons that I'm proud to have been brought up in the Liverpool area.

So, anyway, there's a petition and I'm going to sign it. You might also consider it worth signing (if you do, awesome).

Subject: Museum Funding Cuts

As you may have heard Liverpool's museums have launched a petition across all
venues protesting at potential cuts to their funding from central government.
National Museums Liverpool receives 95% of its funding from central government
and has been told to expect cuts of at least 30%. We may have to close some
venues, including the National Conservation Centre, which may not attract as
many visitors as some venues but does give the public a rare insight into
heritage management/collections care, including archaeological science, and
contains a good range of antiquities:

Staff and visitors can sign petitions at each of our venues or online at:
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/ I do hope you can show your support by
signing this petition and pass the message on to your colleagues who may not be
aware that Liverpool’s rich cultural resources are now under threat.
