Let the Games Commence - Robin Hood 3x05

Without further ado, on to the squeeing!

1) Guy is back! *much squee and dancing* I love his look - less grubby, lovely hair (OK, but you don't all have to like it...), fantastic pants, etc.

2) I thought his new found independence from the Sheriff started off really well - especially that he's now comfortable with insulting the Sheriff for his incompetence! However, by the end of the episode I have to say I was a bit disappointed to see him knocking on the castle door and looking sheepish. Why not take Isabella back to Locksley and hatch new schemes from there??

3) I think I like Isabella. It's a shame she doesn't do Guy's accent, in a way (I've had a bit of a fantasy about him having a sister who was more like him in ways like that, so that's why I have this agenda - of course, living as a lady in Shrewsbury, she might heasily have lost her accent, or perhaps she never picked it up since she was only 13 when she left). But I like the way she looks, and I rather like that yellow dress, and she seems pleasingly complicated. I'd like to see more before I feel I know her character well though.

4) I'm not sure I want to see Guy being betrayed by his sister though! Poor Guy, he never manages to keep anyone close, does he? I'm so absolutely convinced that he deserves redemption... and yet I can't see it coming. And if Isabella isn't willing to tow his line I guess her feelings for him aren't that strong? After all, she must resent him a bit for selling her, and she seems intent on running around with Robin, but it'd make me happy if we got to see a bit of sibling love between them at some point.

5) Let me just say a few things about Much before I forget and before I come back to plot. Allan is still calling him a girl - indeed, it was so open that this surely must be a kind of ongoing reference to something. I know what I think it's a reference to ;) but I'm fairly sure that's probably not what the writers are getting at!

6) I rather liked the way Much asserted his manliness in response. I think that also refers to a kind of male bonding with Allan, perhaps, from the way they look at each other? I must say, I'm starting to think that Kate is just a pawn in their own flirting! I'm also glad she hardly had anything to do this week - part of being one of the gang is to live without having your own plots most of the time!

7) Back to that in a moment, but first just something I picked up on from Tuck - when Much declared he was 'not happy' with Robin's plan to walk unarmed into Guy's camp, Tuck said something like, 'But when are you?' It was such a damning put-down that I really had to bring it up. Oi, Tuck, don't you start! Treat Much Right!

8) Now then, on the subject of outlaws not having their own stories a lot of the time, I must say I was very pleased to see John getting some plot this week! And is it me, or did he look quite hot as a gladiator?

9) The relationship between John and the boy, Walt, was very sweet... but in a bittersweet sort of way. It was lovely seeing their banter and Walt's loyalty and fieriness, but you just couldn't help being reminded that John has his own son, and is separated from him - and that must be very painful. When John said he couldn't look after Walt at the end, he said it was down to him being an outlaw, but I wonder whether some part of that was because he doesn't want, or need, a replacement for his own Little John, whom we know he misses terribly. I do wish we could see Little Little John again!

10) A note on chronology now. Bertha knew the Sheriff, and referred to him as if she knew him before he became the Sheriff. Nevertheless, she said that he had banished from Nottingham - which implies he held some other position of authority. Perhaps this is the answer to the chronology problems of 3x04 (Sins of the Father)? If Rufus's father had been punished by the Sheriff in some other role, that would explain how it could have happened some years in the past (though I'm not sure if it could plausibly have happened as many years ago as was implied by the age of his own son??). But then I still don't know why Robin didn't seem to know the Sheriff when he returned from the Holy Land if that's the case. Just a thought, anyway.

11) Back to some random thoughts, I quite like that Guy's secret weapon turned out to be a lion. It sort of suits him, I think. But I wonder what happened to it in the end! Guy happily left it to eat his guards, so if one of said guards didn't kill it then it must still be roaming around Sherwood Forest - which is getting more and more dangerous for our outlaws!

12) I liked the way the outlaws all got rounded up. And it's funny how Much and Allan automatically seem to get paired up these days...

13) What was that powder that Isabella had sachets of? What Tuck said sounded a bit like 'mustard powder', but I'm not sure, and given that Robin seemed to question how a maid would have got hold of it, I think I might be wrong. Help?

14) They hardly bothered covering their eyes and mouths like Isabella said they should though, did they? I think that could have been better executed, to be honest.

15) And coming back to Isabella again, three small things to say. Firstly, there were two occasions on which she spoke a line and I couldn't make out what she said even on the second watching. One was when she was with Kate (after Kate said about the soldiers not attacking), and I can't remember the other.

16) I loved the way Guy dragged her back to his camp and proceeded to throw furniture around and shout at her. I'm an only child, but I gather this is normal sibling behaviour :) So perhaps we will see some more touching scenes between them in the future - I hope so.

17) And finally, at the end Robin seemed to be enjoying stroking her face while pretending to be angry...
