You know what's missing from my fangirlish life? A proper, convincing het pairing. Is it any wonder I'm so convinced by slash in the absence of anything het? Slash has the advantage that it usually isn't explicitly condoned (if that's the right word, which I don't think it is!), so you get to make up lots of extra detail for fics and such - take the Professionals, for example. There are plenty of references to Bodie and Doyle being close, and yet there so much scope for imagination it's unreal. And they're both feisty, beautiful and convincingly written/acted, so that they're great to put together.
My fandoms just don't have anything like this on the het side at the moment. Gene/Alex in Ashes to Ashes never convinced me, largely because she can't act and clearly isn't good enough for him. Doctor/Rose was lovely in the first series with Ecclesdoctor, but then fizzled out as they built it more and more into the script. OK, so Guy/Marian from Robin Hood was a very good match and never meant to be (hence an exciting situation), but then he went and killed her... I think Purdey/Mike in the New Avengers looked very promising, but I don't have any more experience of that than a single episode.
I wonder whether there's any hope for anything better in the future. The last het pairing that truly got me excited was Daine/Numair (points to the people who know what books I'm talking about), and that's when I was about fourteen at the oldest.
