George Gently - Bomber's Moon

Jul 22, 2008 12:26

Ooh, ooh, this week's George Gently was so good! The week before, I had a few reservations about general pace and plot, but I thought Bomber's Moon was just fantastic.

I won't give any plot spoilers, but I'll just say that it benefits not only from a brilliant and amusing script, decent charactersiation and lots of contemporary references (I like the idea of WWII hanging over people like a shadow), but also from bittersweet sadness of some aspects of characterisation (in particular, the guy with his wife and child, and the fact that GG's late wife is always on his mind).

Martin Shaw still looking great, by the way. GG seems to have a lot of women after him! And - Professionals moment - he just reminded me so much of Doyle when he hit people - he has the same swing, and everything :) I also enjoyed the relationship between GG and Bacchus more this week too - instead of having lots of car scenes where I was just desperately wanted it to be Bodie there with him, there was an increasing sense of understanding between them. At first I didn't get why GG believed Bacchus about his intentions with regard to {spoiler}, and then I realised it must be because he had come to trust him (while thinking he's a bit hopeless much of the time).

One of the best bits was Bacchus claiming he could speak German, and then it slowly unravelling as he revealed he could really only read a bit - this was a funny sort of metanarrative, and GG even got in a joke about 'orals' :)

First class entertainment. Please tell me I don't have to wait forever for another instalment??
