If you don't already know...
Sharpe's Challange will be shown on Sunday 23rd April at 9pm on ITV1!
I've seen some trailers for it, and
I'm a wee bit puzzled. It's set in India - we all knew that. But it seems to combine different bits of story. Some episodes (being flogged, being promoted to officer) clearly belong to the pre-Peninsula books (i.e. the books Tiger, Fortress, Triumph), and yet it also seems that there are bits where he is wearing his 95th Rifles officer's uniform. Um, flashbacks much?
But I'm still puzzled. One trailer seemed to put special emphasis on the promotion part - but SBV is surely too old to play very much young-Sgt-Sharpey stuff? And I thought this was going to be set after Waterloo? I'm not entirely sure what was going on in India x years after Waterloo though...
I'm also puzzled by the bit in the trailer where he tells Some Girl that no woman commands him. Um, if there's anyone who's commanded by women, it's Sharpe. There isn't a single one of the books in which he doesn't compromise himself (as it were) for a woman. How many times have you read the sentence 'Sharpe was in love' in the books? And he *is* like that in the series too. Hmm, strange. maybe he's lying :)
And I have one more thing to say. Why didn't they film Sharpe's Devil, which is a very good book, very exciting, features Harper and Blas Vivar (of Rifles), and set in Chile (with an excursion to St Helena)? It'd make a fantastic film, and it wouldn't have to be filmed in Chile - you could probably get the effect of outdoor bits in Spain or somesuch, and much of it would be filmed inside anyway. Um?
P.S. I have 35 icon capacity! When did that happen? Clearly an excuse for a Sharpe icon!
